Tocumwal Football Club
The Tocumwal Football Netball Club, nicknamed the ''Bloods'', is an Australian rules football and netball club that entered the Picola & District Football League in 2014. The club is based in the town of Tocumwal located in the Riverina district of New South Wales. History Tocumwal FC was established way back in 1891 and played its first recorded match in 1893 against Cobram. Tocumwal played the Murray Border Football Association from 1894 to 1896. They then joined the newly established Federal District Football Association in 1897 and play there until 1902. Tocumwal played in seven consecutive Southern Riverina Football Association (SRFA) grand finals between 1922 and 1928, but unfortunately they only won the last won in 1928. Tocumwal FC was one of the foundation clubs and played in the Murray Football League from 1931 to 2013. Tocumwal won the SRFA junior premiership in 1932, defeating Berrigan in the grand final. The Picola & District Football Netball League is an Australian rules football and netball league affiliated with the AFL Victoria Country. The league covers a large area of northern Victoria, Australia, Victoria and southern New South Wales from Shepparton, Victoria, Shepparton in the south to Jerilderie, New South Wales, Jerilderie in the north and consists of teams from the smaller communities and towns. Picola & District Football League Clubs
Picola is a town in northern Victoria, Australia. The town is located in the Shire of Moira local government area, from the state capital, Melbourne. At the , Picola had a population of 334. Picola Post Office opened on 24 August 1878 and closed in late 2010. The Australia Post outlet was then taken over by the Picola Hotel, until early 2011. The hotel remains a community postal agent. The Picola Hotel offers a variety of services, from meals and functions, weekly raffles, and is now the local milk bar, community postal agent and V/Line ticket agency. The railway to Picola opened in 1896, and until the line closed in 1986, the town was a railhead for loading of wheat and livestock from the local area, and timber from the nearby Barmah National Park. Matthew Taberner (born 17 June 1993) is an Australian rules footballer who plays for the Fremantle Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). He mainly plays as a key position forward. Justin Crawford (20 March 1977 – 21 July 2022) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Sydney and Hawthorn in the Australian Football League (AFL) during the 1990s. Crawford, the younger brother of Brownlow Medal winner Shane, was recruited from Tocumwal in the Murray Football League by Sydney as a zone selection. He was just 18 when he made his debut in 1995 and earned an AFL Rising Star nomination for a 26-disposal and two-goal game against Fitzroy. Leon Higgins
Leon Higgins (born 27 June 1968) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with the Sydney Swans and Hawthorn in the Australian Football League (AFL). A red headed left footer, he was usually seen at the half forward line. He represented New South Wales against Queensland at the Sydney Cricket Ground, 12 May 1992. In February 1997, Higgins would join runner Shane Naylor to play for a Melbourne team in the 1997 Rugby League World Sevens tournament. The Melbourne team failed to win a match. Tony Hughes (born 12 March 1963) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with the Sydney Swans in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Career Hughes, recruited to Sydney from Albury, kicked two goals on his debut, against Essendon in the 11th round of the 1984 VFL season. He played again the following week against Melbourne, a 97-point loss, then lost his spot in the team and didn't make any more appearances that season. Allan Lindsay Jeans (21 September 1933 – 13 July 2011) was an Australian rules footballer and coach. He was inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame at its inception in 1996. Jeans was known for his oratory and motivation skills as a coach and led St Kilda and Hawthorn to a total of four premierships. AFL career Allan Jeans was recruited to St.Kilda after playing in Finley Football Club's 1954 Murray Football League (MFL) senior premiership, and he was also runner up in the 1954 MFL O’Dwyer Medal. After a modest 77-game playing career with the St Kilda Football Club (1955–1959), Jeans, known as "Yabby", took the reins of the Saints in 1961 for a remarkable 16-year career as senior coach.
