Tobacco Township, Michigan
Tobacco Township is a civil township of Gladwin County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 2,566 at the 2010 census. Communities * Beaverton was partially located in the northwestern portion of the township but became autonomous when it incorporated as a city in 1903. *Dale is a former community that was settled in 1895 and also had its own post office. Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the township has a total area of , of which is land and (4.17%) is water. The Tobacco River flows southeast through the center of the township. The Little Cedar River also runs through the township and is a tributary of the Tobacco River, which flows into the Tittabawassee River in the southeast corner of the township. Gladwin County is a county located in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2020 Census, the population was 25,386. The county seat is Gladwin. History Prehistory Gladwin County is a headwaters area. Most of the water that flows out of the county via the Tittabawassee River comes from Gladwin County, only a very small portion flows in from Clare or Roscommon counties. Native Americans crossed this area, and even spent summers here where the fishing was good and summer berries plentiful. Research is underway to determine the importance of an ancient trail that was noted by the crew of the 1839 re-survey of Township 17 north Range 2 west, which later became Beaverton Township. The eastern terminus of the "Muskegon River Trail" was plotted at the confluence of the three branches of the Tobacco (Assa-mo-quoi-Sepe) River in the northwest corner of Section 12. Beaverton, Michigan
Beaverton is a city in Gladwin County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 1,071 at the 2010 census. The city is bordered by Beaverton Township on the west, but the two are administered autonomously. History Beaverton was first settled by lumbermen ''circa'' 1863 and was first known as Grand Forks, after the confluence of the Tobacco and Cedar rivers. It has been continuously settled since 1875. The town was founded in 1890 by the Donald Gunn Ross & Sons lumber company, from Beaverton, Ontario. Donald Ross became the first postmaster on February 17, 1891. Tittabawassee River
The Tittabawassee River flows in a generally southeasterly direction through the Lower Peninsula of the U.S. state of Michigan. The river begins at Secord Lake in Clement Township, at the confluence of the East Branch and the Middle Branch. Edenville, Michigan
Edenville is a small unincorporated community in Edenville Township, Midland County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The community is in the northeast corner of the township near the boundary with Gladwin County, but the settlement is mostly within Midland County. It is on M-30, about 15 miles northwest of Midland. Edenville is situated on the east side of the Tittabawassee River, opposite the point where the Tobacco River flows into the Tittabawassee. The Edenville Dam is less than a mile north and blocks the flow of both rivers to form Wixom Lake. The dam and Wixom Lake are almost entirely within Gladwin County. Settlement has extended northward from Edenville along M-30 and the Tobacco River shores of the lake which is sometimes associated with Edenville, although it is actually part of Tobacco Township.
