Tjong Yong Hian
Tjong Yong Hian (1850–1911) was a Hakka Chinese businessman and kapitan who had a great contribution to the development of society in the city of Medan around the early 1900s, he is also brother of Tjong A Fie, the successor kapitan after him. He began to enter Indonesia in 1867 or when he was about 17 years old, Tjong Yong Hian also known as Zhang Yu Nan or Zhang Rong Xuan, descended from a Hakka family, was born in Guangdong, Songkou city, Meixian District, South China, in 1850. He migrated from China to Indonesia, departed through the port of Shantou and sailed across the South China Sea, after sailing for 21 days, he landed in Jakarta (formerly Batavia), in 1867 at the age of 17 years. Three years later, having had sufficient savings, Tjong Yong Hian left Batavia for Medan, Sumatra, with the intention of starting his own business. Cheong Fatt Tze
Cheong Fatt Tze (born Chang Chin Hsun; 1840–1916), also known as Tjong Tjen Hsoen, Thio Tiauw Siat or Zhang Bishi was a Chinese industrialist, politician and philanthropist. Spending the majority of his life residing in Malaya and the Dutch East Indies, he was a powerful Nanyang business magnate and a first-class Mandarin of China; he was made Consul-General in Singapore and economic advisor. He was once regarded as the richest man in Malaya, with a reputed net worth of 80 million taels worth of silver (equivalent to approximately $2.4 billion today), which brought him the moniker "the Rockefeller of China". Chinese Indonesians ( id, Orang Tionghoa Indonesia) and colloquially Chindo or just Tionghoa are Indonesians whose ancestors arrived from China at some stage in the last eight centuries. Chinese people and their Indonesian descendants have lived in the Indonesian archipelago since at least the 13th century. Many came initially as sojourners (temporary residents), intending to return home in their old age. Some, however, stayed in the region as economic migrants. Their population grew rapidly during the colonial period when workers were contracted from their home provinces in Southern China.
