Tiswas
''Tiswas'' (; an acronym of "Today Is Saturday: Watch And Smile") was a British children's television series that originally aired on Saturday mornings from 5 January 1974 to 3 April 1982, and was produced for the ITV network by ATV. It was created by ATV continuity announcer Peter Tomlinson (later to become a regular presenter on the show) following a test period in 1973 when he tried out a few competitions and "daft stuff" between the programmes. Overview ''Tiswas'' began life as a 'links' strand between many 'filler' programmes, such as cartoons and old films. The popularity of the presenters' links soon eclipsed the staple diet of filler. The correct meaning of the Tiswas initials - ''Today Is Saturday: Watch And Smile'' - was confirmed by Chris Tarrant on the ''Tiswas Reunited'' special of 2007, although '' Today Is Saturday: Wear A Smile'' had also been often cited, albeit incorrectly. Sally James (presenter)
Sally James (born Sally Cann, 10 May 1950) is a former presenter on the ITV Saturday morning children's show ''Tiswas'' from 1977 until it ended in 1982. James's role on the show included conducting the "Almost Legendary Pop Interviews", interviewing musical acts including Elvis Costello, Sting, The Clash, Motörhead, and Kate Bush, and serving as music editor. Before joining ''Tiswas'', James was an actress, appearing in the films '' To Sir, with Love'' (1967), ''Journey to the Unknown'' (1969), ''The Railway Children'' (1970), and ''Never Too Young to Rock'' (1975). Her television roles included parts in '' Castle Haven'' (1969), ''Cousin Bette'' (1971), and ''The Black Arrow'' (1973–74). Peter Tomlinson
Peter Tomlinson (born 4 April 1943, in Bristol) is a broadcaster and continuity announcer. He created the British children's television series ''Tiswas'' and was the programme's co-presenter in its early years. He was also one of the earliest presenters on Harlech Television. In 2007 he became the High Sheriff of the West Midlands. Early broadcasting Born in 1943 in Bristol, he was one of the first announcers on ''Harlech Television'' (later ''HTV''). Christopher John Tarrant, (born 10 October 1946) is an English broadcaster, television personality and former radio DJ. He presented the ITV (TV network), ITV children's television show ''Tiswas'' from 1974 to 1981, and the game show ''Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? Bob Carolgees
Bob Carolgees (born Robert Frederick Johnson; 12 May 1948) is a British comedy entertainer who appeared on the Saturday morning TV series ''Tiswas'' and then later in its adult versions '' O.T.T.'' and '' Saturday Stayback''. He is best known for appearing with a canine puppet named Spit the Dog. Carolgees also worked for eight years on the TV show '' Surprise Surprise'' and on children's game show ''Concentration''. John Gorman (entertainer)
John Gorman (born 4 January 1936), is an English comedian, vocalist and comedy musician. The Scaffold After grammar school, Gorman worked as a Telecommunications Engineer. He was the founder of the comedy music group The Scaffold, best known for their 1968 hit single ''Lily the Pink'', and its successor the band Grimms – the 'G' in Gorman providing the 'G' in Grimms. Lenny Henry
Sir Lenworth George Henry (born 29 August 1958) is a British actor, comedian, singer, television presenter and writer. Henry gained success as a stand-up comedian and impressionist in the late 1970s and early 1980s, culminating in ''The Lenny Henry Show'' in 1984. Associated Television was the original name of the British broadcaster ATV, part of the Independent Television (ITV) network. It provided a service to London at weekends from 1955 to 1968, to the Midlands on weekdays from 1956 to 1968, and to the Midlands all week from 1968 to 1982. The Scaffold
The Scaffold were a comedy, poetry and music trio from Liverpool, England, consisting of musical performer Mike McGear (real name Peter Michael McCartney, the brother of Paul McCartney), poet Roger McGough and comic entertainer John Gorman. Career Overview From as early as 1962, the members of The Scaffold were part of a performing revue group known as The Liverpool One Fat Lady All Electric Show.
