Tina Maharath
Tina Maharath ( lo, ຕີນາ ມະຫາລາດ) (born November 30, 1990) is an American politician currently serving as an Ohio State Senator from the 3rd District. She also serves in the Senate Democrats leadership team as Minority Whip. As a Democrat, Maharath won election to the Senate in a highly close race with Republican opponent Anne Gonzales, flipping the 3rd Senate District from the Republicans. Maharath's victory represented the first time Ohio Democrats had won a Republican held State Senate seat since 2006. Maharath is also notable for being the first Asian-American woman in the Ohio Senate and the first Laotian-American elected into public office. Maharath is from Whitehall, Ohio, the daughter of Laotian refugees. Her father served the U.S. Army under the Laos Army while her mother worked as a nurse in the Laos Army. Ohio's 3rd Senatorial District
Ohio's 3rd senatorial district has historically spanned vast portions of central Ohio from the Miami Valley to the Scioto Valley, but currently encompasses approximately a third of Franklin County. Michele Reynolds is an American business owner and member of the Ohio Senate. In the 2022 Ohio Senate election, 2022 midterm election, she made history as the first African-American woman elected as a Republican Party (United States), Republican in Franklin County, Ohio, Franklin County. Laotian Americans ( lo, ຄົນອາເມລິກາລາວ) are Americans who trace their ancestry to Laos. Laotian Americans are included in the larger category of Asian Americans. The major immigrant generation were generally refugees who escaped Laos during the warfare and disruption of the 1970s, and entered refugee camps in Thailand across the Mekong River. They emigrated to the United States during the late 1970s and throughout the 1980s.
