Tigervision
Tigervision was a subsidiary of Tiger Toys which produced video games for the Atari 2600, Atari 8-bit family, TI-99/4A, VIC-20 and Commodore 64. Most of their games were ports. '' Polaris'' and '' River Patrol'' were originally arcade games from Taito and Orca, respectively. ''Marauder'', ''Threshold'', and '' Jawbreaker'' were originally computer games from Sierra On-Line. ''Miner 2049er'' was first published for the Atari 8-bit family by Big Five Software. While the Atari 8-bit version contained ten levels, it was split into two cartridges for the 2600, each sold as a separate game containing three levels. River Patrol (game)
is an action arcade video game developed by Orca Corporation and released by GGI in Japan in 1981. It was licensed to Kersten for distribution in North America. The player pilots a patrol boat along a vertically scrolling river to rescue people from the crocodile-infested waters while avoiding obstacles along the way. Tigervision released an Atari 2600 version in 1984. Gameplay ''River Patrol'' is an action game where players take the role of a captain navigating a river patrol boat across multiple levels to rescue drowning people who fell into the crocodile-infested river for points while avoiding incoming boulders, floating logs and other obstacles that threaten to sink the vessel.''River Patrol'' Instructions (Atari 2600, US) The main objective is to reach a dam at the end of each level before the timer runs out and the boat sinks. King Kong (1982 Video Game)
''King Kong'' is a platform game programmed by Karl T. Olinger for the Atari 2600 and published by Tigervision in 1982. Based on the licensed King Kong character, the game is a clone of the first screen of ''Donkey Kong''. It was Tigervision's first cartridge release. Tiger Electronic Toys produced a handheld version, licensed to Tandy, the same year. Gameplay The objective is to rescue the girl by climbing ladders to the top of the screen while jumping over holes and autonomous bombs. Magic bombs are worth five times the points of regular bombs when jumped over. As in ''Donkey Kong'', each level has a bonus that counts down. If it reaches zero, a life is lost. There are settings for 1 or 2 players alternating turns, slow or fast bombs, and whether magic bombs exist. Reception Ed Driscoll reviewed ''King Kong'' in ''The Space Gamer'' No. 58. ''Polaris'' is a fixed shooter video game released in arcades in 1980 by Taito. Players control a submarine which can only shoot missiles upward. The goal of the player is to destroy all of the airplanes in each level while avoiding bombs dropped from the aircraft, as well as mines launched by enemy submarines and depth charges dropped from boats that speed by. Versions for the Atari 2600 and VIC-20 were released by Tigervision in 1983. Gameplay Subs are sunk if players touch a projectile, any enemy sub or boat, depth charge, mine, the ocean floor, torpedoes, or reef. Game ends upon last sub sunk. *Small airplane: Depending on which level the player is on, there will be six to ten small aircraft in the air when the level begins. One half of the aircraft are pink and move right to left, and the other half are blue and move from left to right. Miner 2049er
''Miner 2049er'' is a platform game created by Bill Hogue that was released in 1982 by Big Five Software. It was developed for the Atari 8-bit family and widely converted to other systems. The title "Miner 2049er" evokes a 21st-century take on the circa-1849 California Gold Rush in which the gold miners and prospectors were nicknamed "49ers". It was the first Atari computer game, and by far the biggest release, from the previously TRS-80 focused company. A key selling point was having ten different screens, which was a large number for a platform game at the time. For comparison, ''Donkey Kong'' (1981) has four screens (and its console versions only two or three). Jawbreaker (video Game)
''Jawbreaker'' is a Pac-Man clone, ''Pac-Man'' clone programmed by John Harris (software developer), John Harris for the Atari 8-bit family and published by On-Line Systems. Released in 1981 before an official version of ''Pac-Man'' was available, it was widely lauded by reviewers, and became a major seller. The story of its creation and Harris's Atari 8-bit implementation of ''Frogger'' form a portion of Steven Levy's 1984 book, ''Hackers: Heroes of the Computer Revolution''. ''Jawbreaker'' was ported to the Apple II in 1981 and Harris's different take on the game for the Atari 2600 was released the following year. TI-99/4A
The TI-99/4 and TI-99/4A are home computers released by Texas Instruments in 1979 and 1981, respectively. Based on the Texas Instruments TMS9900 microprocessor originally used in minicomputers, the TI-99/4 was the first 16-bit home computer. The associated video display controller provides color graphics and sprite support which were only comparable with those of the Atari 400 and 800 released a month after the TI-99/4. The calculator-style keyboard of the TI-99/4 was cited as a weak point, and TI's reliance on ROM cartridges and their practice of limiting developer information to select third parties resulted in a lack of software for the system. The TI-99/4A was released in June 1981 to address some of these issues with a simplified internal design, full-travel keyboard, improved graphics, and a unique expansion system. Big Five Software ( Big 5 Software) was an American video game developer in the first half of the 1980s founded by Bill Hogue and Jeff Konyu. The company released games for the Tandy TRS-80 and later the Atari 8-bit family. Most of its TRS-80 games were clones of arcade games of the time, such as '' Galaxy Invasion'' (''Galaxian''), ''Super Nova'' (''Asteroids''), ''Defense Command'' (''Missile Command''), and ''Meteor Mission'' (''Lunar Rescue''). Taito
is a Japanese company that specializes in video games, toys, arcade cabinets and game centers, based in Shinjuku, Tokyo. The company was founded by Michael Kogan in 1953 as the importing vodka, vending machines and jukeboxes into Japan. It began production of video games in 1973. In 2005, Taito was purchased by Square Enix, becoming a wholly owned subsidiary by 2006.
