Tiddington-with-Albury is a civil parish in South Oxfordshire. It includes the village of Albury (Ordnance Survey grid reference SP655051), the larger village of Tiddington (OS Grid ref. Tiddington, Oxfordshire
Tiddington is a village in the civil parish of Tiddington-with-Albury, about west of Thame in Oxfordshire, England. It is on the A418 road between Thame and Oxford. The 2011 Census recorded Tiddington-with-Albury's population as 683. Tiddington is on the county boundary with Buckinghamshire. It was a manor and hamlet of the parish of Albury, although for most of its history it has been a larger place than Albury. In 1866 Tiddington became a separate civil parish, but in 1932 the two parishes were reunited. School It was recorded in 1786 that in 1737 Lady Mary Bertie, widow of the 2nd Earl of Abingdon had bequeathed £100 for a school in the parish of Albury. This was invested and used to support a schoolteacher, sometimes in Albury and other times in Tiddington. By 1819 the school taught 12 boys funded by Lady Bertie's charity plus other pupils whose families paid fees. There are no records of girl pupils being admitted until 1846. Draycot is a hamlet on the River Thame, in the civil parish of Tiddington-with-Albury, in the South Oxfordshire district, in the county of Oxfordshire, England. It is situated approximately 4½ miles to the west of Thame. In 1881 it had a population of 17. The name derives from Old English ''dræg'' (a slipway or drag, a sledge, or a dray), with ''cot'' (a cottage or shelter). After the Norman Conquest the lord of the manor was Richard, son of Rainfrid de Bretteville whilst Milo of Wallingford was tenant-in-chief. Albury is a village in the civil parish of Tiddington-with-Albury, about west of Thame in Oxfordshire. Manor Its toponym is derived from the Old English ''Aldeberie'', meaning "old fortified place", suggesting that the village's origins are Saxon. After the Norman Conquest of England William the Conqueror granted the manor of Albury to William FitzOsbern, 1st Earl of Hereford. When the 1st Earl was killed in battle in Flanders in 1071 his estates in England and Wales passed to his son Roger de Breteuil, 2nd Earl of Hereford. In 1075 the 2nd Earl rebelled against William I, who suppressed the rebellion and confiscated the Earl's estates. It is not clear to whom the king granted Albury, or who held it until early in the 13th century when it belonged to William de Redvers, 5th Earl of Devon.
