Ticoa
''Ticoa'' is an extinct genus originally assigned to the Cycadales from the Early Cretaceous of Argentina, Chile, and Antarctica. Other authors view this genus as a member of the polyphyletic "seed ferns". Taxonomy The genus was erected by Sergio Archangelsky based on material from the Anfiteatro de Ticó formation. The genus first comprised two species, ''T. harrisii'' and ''T. magnipinnulata,'' with ''T. lamellata'' being described from the Bajo Grande locality in Patagonia, Argentina. The species ''T. magallanica'' was described from the Springhill formation in Chile. ''T. jeffersonii'' was described from Hope Bay in Antarctica. ''T. lanceolata'' was described much later from the Anfiteatro de Ticó formation . Description ''Ticoa'' includes large, bipinnate or tripinnate leaves with pecopteroid pinnules and a robust rachis. Anfiteatro De Ticó Formation
The Anfiteatro de Ticó Formation is a geological formation from the Deseado Massif in the province of Santa Cruz, Argentina. Paleobiology The Anfiteatro de Ticó preserves a rich and diverse flora including macrofossils, mesofossils, and microfossils. These have been object of detailed investigations since the 1960'. Depositional environments The formation is of continental origin, and includes riparian and lacustrine deposits. Sergio Archangelsky
Sergio Archangelsky (27 March 1931 – 10 July 2022) was an Argentine paleobotanist and palynologist. He was a pioneer of modern paleobotany in Argentina, as well as of cuticular morphology and ultrastructure. He was also a corresponding member of the Argentine Academy of Science. Biography Sergio Archangelsky was born on 27 March 1931. He obtained his master's degree in geology (1954) and his doctorate (1957) at the University of Buenos Aires. While preparing for his doctorate, he started working in Tucumán (1955–61), at the Lillo Foundation, where he later will become Professor of Paleontology and geology. Thanks to a fellowship from the British Council, he was able to visit Britain, where he spent time working at the University of Glasgow, the University of Reading, and the Natural History Museum in London, where he interacted and collaborated with Thomas Harris. Pinnation (also called pennation) is the arrangement of feather-like or multi-divided features arising from both sides of a common axis. Pinnation occurs in biological morphology, in crystals, such as some forms of ice or metal crystals, and in patterns of erosion or stream beds. Hope Bay
Hope Bay (Spanish: ''Bahía Esperanza'') on Trinity Peninsula, is long and wide, indenting the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula and opening on Antarctic Sound. It is the site of the Argentinian Antarctic settlement Esperanza Base, established in 1952. Important Bird Area The bay has been identified as an Important Bird Area (IBA) by BirdLife International because it supports one of the largest Adélie penguin colonies in Antarctica with around 125,000 pairs. Pteridospermatophyta
The term Pteridospermatophyta (or "seed ferns" or "Pteridospermatopsida") is a polyphyletic group of extinct seed-bearing plants (spermatophytes). The earliest fossil evidence for plants of this type is the genus ''Elkinsia'' of the late Devonian age. They flourished particularly during the Carboniferous and Permian periods. Cycads are seed plants that typically have a stout and woody (ligneous) trunk with a crown of large, hard, stiff, evergreen and (usually) pinnate leaves.
