Tibet Sun
__NOTOC__ Tibet Sun is an English-language news website focusing on Tibet and the Tibetan people, world news, opinions, essays, and photography from other media. It was founded and produced by Lobsang Wangyal in 2008, and is based in Dharamshala, India. Lobsang conceived the idea of Tibet Sun in 1999, but got the domain in 2004 after chasing the parked domain for two years. The site was launched on 8.8.8 – the opening of the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. Lobsang specialises in Media, Art and Entertainment and hence Tibet Sun is his media production as a photojournalist. Lobsang is the director of the Miss Tibet Pageant, Tibetan Music Awards and Free Spirit Film Festival. He produced the Tibetan Olympics 2008 in Dharamshala. The ''Tibet Mirror'' () was a Tibetan-language newspaper published in Kalimpong, India, from 1925 to 1963 and circulated primarily in Tibet but eventually with subscribers worldwide. Its originator was Gergan Tharchin who was at the same time its journalist, editor, and manager. The Tibetan Olympics 2008 () was held from 15 to 25 May 2008 in Dharamsala, in northern India. Its purpose was to ensure that Tibetans could also celebrate the excitement of world's biggest sporting event – the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing – following the approach of sports and communication. The event was announced at a press conference in McLeod Ganj on 15 May 2007. There were two championships – Men and Women. Twenty-three participants competed, ten women and 13 men. Each participant took part in ten different sports, which included long-distance running, swimming, shooting, archery, and track and field events. The winners of the Women's Championships were Tsering Lhamo, First place, Dhartso Kyi, Second place, and Dolkar Tso, Third place. Tibetan Music Awards were founded in 2003 by Lobsang Wangyal and are held every two years in Dharamshala, in northern India. Winners are chosen through online voting. In 2003, Techung won the best modern and traditional music award. Rangzen Shonu won "Best Album". In 2005, Ama Dachung, Tibetan artist, 81 years, received the award for her lifetime work for Tibetan music. Tibetan People
The Tibetan people (; ) are an East Asian ethnic group native to Tibet. Their current population is estimated to be around 6.7 million. In addition to the majority living in Tibet Autonomous Region of China, significant numbers of Tibetans live in the Chinese provinces of Gansu, Qinghai, Sichuan, and Yunnan, as well as in India, Nepal, and Bhutan. Tibetan languages belong to the Tibeto-Burman language group. Miss Tibet
Miss Tibet is an annual beauty pageant held in McLeod Ganj, India. It is produced by Lobsang Wangyal Productions. History The first-ever Miss Tibet Pageant was produced by Lobsang Wangyal in October 2002. The pageant was criticized as "aping western culture" and "un-Tibetan". The pageant has continued yearly since then. In 2017 director Lobsang Wangyal announced that he would not continue organising the Pageant, and it could be sold to someone who would carry on its ideals. In 2002, four Tibetan girls participated in the competition. Four editions of the Pageant's 15-year history — 2003, 2005, 2013, and 2014 — had only one participant.
