Thurnby and Scraptoft railway station was a railway station in Thurnby, Leicestershire on the Great Northern Railway Leicester branch. Thurnby & Scraptoft railway station was situated approximately four miles east of Leicester Belgrave Road station. History The official opening of the line was on 1 January 1883, though the first train was an excursion that ran on 2 October 1882 heading for Skegness, setting the trend for the rest of its life. Thurnby & Scraptoft was originally served by passenger trains running between Leicester and Grantham or Peterborough. Passenger services dwindled during the 1950s and ceased altogether on 7 December 1953. However, an unadvertised local workmen's train was reinstated and ran until 29 April 1957. Thereafter, the only traffic was freight and summer seaside excursions. Thurnby is a village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Thurnby and Bushby, in the Harborough district, in the county of Leicestershire, England. It is just east of Leicester's city boundaries. Thurnby village proper is set to the south of the A47, just after it leaves the city. A sister village, Bushby lies just to the east and merges into it. To the west is Evington and Thurnby Lodge in Leicester proper, to the north is Scraptoft and to the south and east are open countryside – the next villages in these directions are Stoughton and Houghton on the Hill. History Thurnby is not mentioned in the Domesday Book, possibly being considered part of Stoughton, but is recorded by the 13th century. Colwick marshalling yard, also known as Colwick sidings, was a large railway marshalling yard in Netherfield, Nottingham designed for the concentration of coal traffic from the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Coalfield for transfer to other marshalling yards in London. The Great Northern and London and North Western Joint Railway was a British railway line, almost entirely within Leicestershire. Authorised by the same Act of Parliament, the Great Northern Railway Leicester Branch was built, branching from the Joint Line; on the same basis the Newark to Bottesford Line was built. The lines opened progressively between 1879 and 1883. The dominant traffic was iron ore, and the agricultural produce of the area served also generated considerable business. The passenger usage was never heavy, although some unusual through services were attempted at first.
