Thurles Town F.C.
Thurles Town Football Club is an Irish association football club based in Thurles, County Tipperary. Their senior team play in the North Tipperary District League. Thurles Town A.F.C. was formed in 1950. In 1977 they merged with Peake Villa to become Thurles Town F.C. and in order to enter a team in the League of Ireland. Thurles Town played in the League of Ireland from 1977–78 until 1981–82. Their best performance was a ninth-place finish in 1979–80. Throughout their time in the League of Ireland, Thurles Town also competed in the FAI Cup. However they never progressed beyond the first round they played in. When Thurles Town withdrew from the League of Ireland in 1982, Peake Villa returned to play in the Kilkenny League and the Tipperary Southern and District League. Alfie Hale
Alfred "Alfie" Hale (born 28 August 1939 in Waterford, Republic of Ireland) is a former Irish association football, footballer and manager who played for several clubs in both the League of Ireland and the Football League, English League, most notably, Waterford F.C., Waterford, Aston Villa F.C., Aston Villa, Doncaster Rovers F.C., Doncaster Rovers and Cork Celtic F.C., Cork Celtic. During his career, Hale scored 153 goals in the League of Ireland and a further 66 with English League clubs. Mick Cooke (football Manager)
Mick Cooke (born 14 August 1951) is an Irish association football manager and former player. Playing career A former youths international Cooke played in the qualifiers for Republic of Ireland national under-19 football team in the 1970 UEFA European Under-18 Football Championship. An inside left he started his career at St Patrick's Athletic F.C. He then moved to Drogheda United scoring 8 league goals in four seasons and was their top scorer in 1972/73. He played in both games of the 1971 FAI Cup Final as Drogheda lost in the replay to Limerick. The Dubliner was signed by Mick Meagan for Shamrock Rovers later that year, the man who had brought him to Drogheda as a teenager four years earlier. Neville Steedman
Neville Steedman (born 18 September 1957) was an Irish soccer player during the 1980s who played as a forward. He represented Thurles Town, Shamrock Rovers and Galway United amongst others during his career. He made three appearances for Rovers in the European Cup and 75 in total. Steedman had been playing reserve football for Bohs and Athlone after his stint at Thurles when he was contacted by Jim McLaughlin (football manager). He signed for the Glenmalure Park club in 1983 making his debut in a Dublin City Cup game on 2 September. On 22 August 1984, in a LFA President's Cup final, he took over from injured goalkeeper Jody Byrne as Rovers won the first trophy of the season. Spent the 1985–86 season at Galway United before moving back to the Hoops. Scored the last ever goal at Milltown in a reserve Cup game win on 19 May 1987. Jimmy McGeough (born 13 August 1944) is a Northern Irish former football player and manager. Playing and coaching career His clubs included Derry City, Lincoln and Waterford United. Joining Derry in July 1963 he was part of the only Derry City side ever to win the Irish League (Northern Ireland) and was an Irish Cup winner too with the Candystripes. Terry Flanagan (footballer)
Terry Flanagan (born 1950) was an Irish soccer player who played for Bohemians, Dundalk and Thurles Town during the 1970s. Flanagan was top scorer in the 1973-74 League of Ireland season with 18 league goals from 26 games. His total for that season was 29 goals from 43 appearances in all competitions. He made three appearances for Bohemians in European competition, scoring once at Ibrox in the European Cup. In November 1975 he was transfer listed. He then signed for Dundalk F.C. and scored on his debut. In his three seasons at Oriel Park he scored a total of 33 goals including the winner in a 1977-78 European Cup Winners' Cup clash with Hajduk Split. The League of Ireland XI, more recently referred to as the ''Airtricity League XI'' for sponsorship reasons, is the representative team of the League of Ireland, the national association football league of the Republic of Ireland. For much of its history, the League of Ireland XI has effectively acted as a reserve or B team to the senior Republic of Ireland national team, providing international representative honours to home-based players. Pat Dunne
Patrick "Pat" Dunne (9 February 1943 – 25 September 2015) was an Irish professional football goalkeeper. He played internationally for the Republic of Ireland and professionally in both Republic of Ireland and England. Dunne played in Dublin with Stella Maris before playing in England for Everton. He returned to Ireland to play with the Shamrock Rovers, making his debut, along with Jackie Mooney against Shelbourne at Dalymount Park on 22 August 1962. He played in the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup that season and the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup the following season against Valencia giving him a total of 4 European appearances. During this season Pat played in all 22 league games where Rovers only lost once winning every trophy except the Top Four Cup.
