Thunder Bay 10 Mile Road Race
The Ten Mile Road Race is an annual road running race held in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. It originated in 1910, and follows a route linking Port Arthur and Fort William. The race draws about 700 runners, and is held annually on Victoria Day, a Canadian national holiday. This holiday occurs on the 3rd Monday in May. It is the oldest 10 mile road race in Canada, predating the Tely 10 mile road race held in St John's, Newfoundland and Labrador since 1922. The Fort William Daily Times-Journal, a local newspaper, announced in April 1910 that it would sponsor an annual road race with the purpose of promoting "healthy and clean sport at the head of the lakes". Port Arthur, Ontario
Port Arthur was a city in Northern Ontario, Canada, located on Lake Superior. In January 1970, it amalgamated with Fort William and the townships of Neebing and McIntyre to form the city of Thunder Bay. Port Arthur had been the district seat of Thunder Bay District. It is historically notable as a temporary (1882–1885) eastern terminus of the Canadian Pacific Railway. It served as a major transshipment point for lakers that carried cargo to Port Arthur from across the Great Lakes. Fort William was a city in Ontario, Canada, located on the Kaministiquia River, at its entrance to Lake Superior. Tely 10
The Tely 10 Mile Road Race (generally known as the ''Tely 10'') is a 10 mile road race held in the communities of Paradise, Mount Pearl and St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada that attracts over 4000 runners annually. The race course often gets mistaken as 10 km. The race began in 1922 making it one of the oldest road races in all of Canada. The race was not run from 1940 to 1945 because of World War II; thus, the 2019 race was the 92nd in the event's history. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the in-person 2020 edition was also cancelled, and the 2021 event was held on October 31st. Course record holders are Paul McCloy (47:04 in 1985) and Anne Johnston (54:25 in 2019). The race is held every fourth Sunday in July. Marathon is a town in the Canadian province of Ontario, located in Thunder Bay District, on the north shore of Lake Superior north of Pukaskwa National Park, in the heart of the Canadian Shield.
