Thunder (British Comics)
''Thunder'' was a weekly British comics periodical published by Fleetway Publications from 17 October 1970 to 13 March 1971. A boys' adventure comic, the title only lasted for 22 editions before being merged with another Fleetway title, the long-established '' Lion''. Publishing history On 1 January 1969 International Publishing Corporation (IPC) merged Fleetway Publications and Odhams Press into a single division, IPC Magazines. This left them in charge of a large number of weekly comics aimed at younger readers, including seasoned titles such as ''Eagle'', ''Lion'' and ''Valiant''. The new company swiftly launched a spate of new titles - girls' comic ''Sally'' in June 1969; humour title ''Whizzer and Chips'' in October 1969; and the sports-themed ''Scorcher'' in January 1970. Rotherham
Rotherham () is a large minster and market town in South Yorkshire, England. The town takes its name from the River Rother which then merges with the River Don. The River Don then flows through the town centre. It is the main settlement of the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham. Rotherham is also the third largest settlement in South Yorkshire after Sheffield and Doncaster, which it is located between. Traditional industries included glass making and flour milling. Barrie Tomlinson is a former editor and writer of British comics in the 1970s and '80s. Tomlinson began his career at IPC Magazines in 1961, initially as a writer and then later as sub-editor on the comics ''Lion'' and then ''Tiger'', becoming editor of the latter title in 1969. He later became the founding editor of the comics ''Roy of the Rovers'' (1976), ''Speed'' (1980), '' Scream!'' (1984), ''Wildcat'' (1988) and ''Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles'' (1990). ''Starlord'' was a short-lived weekly British science fiction comic book magazine published by IPC in 1978 as a sister title to '' 2000 AD'', which had been launched the previous year in anticipation of a science fiction boom surrounding ''Star Wars''. ''Starlord'' was planned as a fortnightly title for older readers, with longer stories and higher production values than ''2000 AD'' and the rest of the IPC boys' comics stable, but this proved too ambitious. ''Tornado'' was a short-lived weekly British comic magazine published for 22 issues by IPC Magazines between March 1979 and August 1979. After the cancellations of the '' Starlord'' and ''Action'' titles, IPC launched ''Tornado'' as a way to use up stories already commissioned for the other titles. Originally to be called ''Heroes'', like ''Action'' it was a mixed title featuring war, detective, horror, and science fiction stories. A boys' adventure comic, the title only lasted for 22 editions before being merged with another Fleetway title, the long-established '' Buster''. Publishing history While IPC Magazines' previous attempt to launch a new boys' comic, ''Thunder'', had been short-lived and merged with '' Lion'' earlier in 1971 the experiment had not been a complete waste; ''Thunders new features had proven popular with readers, and given the post-merger ''Lion'' a sales boost. Under group director Jack Le Grand, the decision was taken to try another weekly as a testbed for new stories, which could then be folded into an extant title should the new arrival not find an audience.
