Thue Christiansen
Thue Christiansen (25 February 1940 – 26 June 2022) was a Greenlandic teacher, visual artist, and politician. Christiansen is best known as the designer of the current flag of Greenland, which was adopted on 21 June 1985. A trained teacher, Christiansen was elected to the Inatsisartut for Siumut in 1979 when Greenland was granted home rule. He was the Naalakkersuisut, Greenlandic Minister of Culture and Education from 1979 until 1983. Christiansen died on 26 June 2022, at his home in Hals, Denmark, Hals, Denmark. He was 82. Flag Of Greenland
The flag of Greenland ( kl, Kalaallit erfalasuat, da, Grønlands flag) was designed by Greenland native Thue Christiansen. It features two equal horizontal bands of white (top) and red (bottom) with a counter-changed red-and-white disk slightly to the hoist side of centre. The entire flag measures 18 by 12 parts; each stripe measures 6 parts; the disk is 8 parts in diameter, horizontally offset by 7 parts from the hoist to the centre of the circle, and vertically centered. Its local name in the Greenlandic language is ''Erfalasorput'', which means "our flag". The term ''Aappalaartoq'' (meaning "the red") is also used for both the Greenlandic flag and the flag of Denmark (''Dannebrog''). Today, Greenlanders display both the ''Erfalasorput'' and the ''Dannebrog''—often side by side. Sermitsiaq (newspaper)
''Sermitsiaq'' is one of two national newspapers in Greenland. It is named after the mountain Sermitsiaq. The newspaper was published for the first time May 21, 1958, as a Kalaallisut-language alternative to the Danish-language newspaper ''Mikken''. The two magazines were printed separately, with Mikken on Saturdays and Sermitsiaq on Mondays for about six months, until Mikken was published for the last time on 22 November the same year. ''Sermitsiaq'' was first printed in both Danish and Kalaallisut the week before ''Mikken'' closed down. ''Sermitsiaq'' was a local newspaper distributed only in Nuuk city until around 1980 when the newspaper became national. The newspaper became increasingly political in the period around 1980, since Greenland was granted home rule in 1979. The newspaper is published every Friday, while the online version is updated several times daily. Naalakkersuisut ( en, Cabinet of Greenland, da, Grønlands Regering), is the chief executive body and the government of Greenland since the island became self-governing in 1979.
