Thomas Sinclair Holden
Thomas Sinclair Holden (6 January 1906 – 23 December 1973) was an Australian politician and judge. He was born in Redfern to Thomas Douglas Percy Holden, also a politician. He attended Fort Street High School and in 1928 received a Bachelor of Law from the University of Sydney. He married Rose Scott Winden, with whom he had three children. From 1928 he practised as a solicitor, and was called to the bar in 1938. He specialised in workers' compensation. Redfern, New South Wales
Redfern is an inner-city suburb of Sydney located 3 kilometres south of the Sydney central business district and is part of the local government area of the City of Sydney. Strawberry Hills is a locality on the border with Surry Hills. Strathfield is a suburb in the Inner West of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. It is located 12 kilometres west of the Sydney central business district and is the administrative centre of the Municipality of Strathfield. The District Court of New South Wales is the intermediate court in the judicial hierarchy of the Australian state of New South Wales. It is a trial court and has an appellate jurisdiction. In addition, the Judges of the Court preside over a range of tribunals. In its criminal jurisdiction, the Court may deal with all serious criminal offences except murder, treason and piracy. Thomas Douglas Percy Holden (1 January 1859 – 31 December 1938) was an Australian politician who served as a Member of the New South Wales Legislative Council from 1912 to 1934 and also as an Alderman and Mayor of the Municipality of Redfern. The owner of a tobacconist and barber shop in Redfern, Holden spent most of his career associated with the Australian Labor Party. The Liberal Party of Australia (New South Wales Division), commonly known as the New South Wales Liberals, is the state division of the Liberal Party of Australia in New South Wales. United Australia Party
The United Australia Party (UAP) was an Australian political party that was founded in 1931 and dissolved in 1945. The party won four federal elections in that time, usually governing in coalition with the Country Party. It provided two prime ministers: Joseph Lyons ( 1932–1939) and Robert Menzies ( 1939–1941). The UAP was created in the aftermath of the 1931 split in the Australian Labor Party. Six fiscally conservative Labor MPs left the party to protest the Scullin Government's financial policies during the Great Depression. Led by Joseph Lyons, a former Premier of Tasmania, the defectors initially sat as independents, but then agreed to merge with the Nationalist Party and form a united opposition.
