Thomas Scrope, 10th Baron Scrope
Thomas Scrope, 10th Baron Scrope of Bolton, KG (1567 – 2 September 1609) was the son of Henry Scrope, 9th Baron Scrope of Bolton and Margaret Howard, daughter of Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey and Frances de Vere. Biography He was knight of the shire (MP) for Cumberland from 1584 to 1586 and from 1588 to 1593. He held the office of Warden of the English West March from 1593 until the Union of the Crowns of England and Scotland in 1603. He was made a Knight of the Garter in 1599. While Scrope was Warden, the outlaw Kinmont Willie Armstrong was arrested (in violation of a truce day) and imprisoned at Carlisle Castle. Scrope had only recently been appointed to the post of Warden, and he was unsure of what to do with an outlaw who had been illegally arrested. On 13 April 1596, as a result of a raid orchestrated by Walter Scott, 1st Lord Scott of Buccleuch, Kinmont Willie was freed. Philadelphia Scrope
Philadelphia, Lady Scrope ( Carey; died 1627) was an English aristocrat and courtier. She was a daughter of Henry Carey, 1st Baron Hunsdon and Ann Morgan. Her brother, Robert Carey, was the governor of Prince Charles from 1605 to 1610. In 1584, she married Thomas Scrope, 10th Baron Scrope of Bolton, later a Knight of the Order of the Garter. They had one child Emanuel Scrope, 1st Earl of Sunderland. In November 1593, a page of Lady Scrope, who was lady of the bedchamber, died in the keep at Windsor Castle and Queen Elizabeth considered moving her household for fear of sickness. Lady Scrope took part in the Harefield Entertainment in August 1602, and was given a mask or vizard, as the lines "Want you a mask! Here fortune give you one: Yet nature gives the rose and lily none" were recited. She was at the queen's bedside near the time of her death. Berwick-upon-Tweed (), sometimes known as Berwick-on-Tweed or simply Berwick, is a town and civil parish in Northumberland, England, south of the Anglo-Scottish border, and the northernmost town in England. She served as Lady of the Bedchamber to queen Elizabeth I of England, and then as Mistress of the Robes to Anne of Denmark from 1603 until 1619. Harefield Entertainment
The Harefield Entertainment included hospitality and performances for Elizabeth I of England in August 1602. Several copies of the performance script survive, along with original manuscript accounts of the Queen's host which seems to have been manipulated by literary forgery in the 19th-century to enhance their interest. Preparations Thomas Egerton, 1st Viscount Brackley, Sir Thomas Egerton, the Lord Keeper, bought Harefield Place, now in the London Borough of Hillingdon, from Sir Edmund Anderson in 1601. The Queen came to Harefield on 29 July 1602 and stayed until 3 August. Egerton's bills for the entertainment and hospitality survive. Some speeches and drama were also recorded and printed. A "lottery" was performed in which gifts were presented to the ladies of the court as humorous rhyming couplets were recited. Elizabeth I (7 September 153324 March 1603) was Queen of England and Ireland from 17 November 1558 until her death in 1603. Elizabeth was the last of the five House of Tudor monarchs and is sometimes referred to as the "Virgin Queen". Elizabeth was the daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, his second wife, who was executed when Elizabeth was two years old. Anne's marriage to Henry was annulled, and Elizabeth was for a time declared illegitimate. Her half-brother Edward VI ruled until his death in 1553, bequeathing the crown to Lady Jane Grey and ignoring the claims of his two half-sisters, the Catholic Mary and the younger Elizabeth, in spite of statute law to the contrary.
