Thomas Kirk (artist)
Thomas Kirk (1765–1797) was an England, English artist, book illustrator, and engraver of the late 18th century. A pupil of Richard Cosway, Kirk exhibited the first of 25 works at the Royal Academy in 1785. Although he illustrated James Thomson (poet, born 1700), James Thomson's ''The Seasons (Thomson poem), The Seasons'' in 1793, he was employed most consistently by Charles Cooke for his editions of celebrated works of literature. ''Cooke's Pocket Edition of English Poets'' (1796-8) was especially popular. Kirk's illustrations impressed many of his contemporaries. Edward Dayes said of him: 'He passed like a meteor through the region of art'. He created many famous engravings based either upon his own work or works by, amongst others, Angelica Kauffman, Richard Westall, and Sir Joshua Reynolds. Thomas Kirk (botanist)
Thomas Kirk (18 January 1828 – 8 March 1898) was an English-born botanist, teacher, public servant, writer and churchman who moved to New Zealand with his wife and four children in late 1862. The New Zealand government commissioned him in 1884 to compile a report on the indigenous forests of the country and appointed him as chief conservator of forests the following year. He published 130 papers in botany and plants including ''The Durability of New Zealand Timbers'', ''The Forest Flora of New Zealand'' and ''Students' Flora of New Zealand''. Early life and career Thomas was the son of a Coventry nurseryman, George Kirk, and Sarah West, a florist. As a consequence of his parents' involvement in nursery work, he displayed a keen interest in botany, and later worked at a timber mill in Coventry. Thomas William Kirk
Thomas William Kirk (30 June 1856 – 19 May 1936) was a biologist and a scientific administrator from New Zealand. He studied the fauna and flora of New Zealand. Early life Thomas William Kirk was born in Coventry, England, on 30 June 1856. He was the eldest surviving son of Sarah Jane Mattocks and Thomas Kirk, and he emigrated to Auckland with his parents and three other siblings in 1863: an older brother (name unknown); Harry Borrer Kirk, and Amy Kirk. Five other siblings were born in New Zealand: Lily May Atkinson and Cybele Ethel Kirk were the only two surviving past childhood. He was educated at St. James' School and Auckland College, then started working on the Geological Survey staff of Sir James Hector in 1874. Thomas Kirk (sculptor)
Thomas Kirk (1781 – 19 April 1845) was an Irish sculptor. Born in Cork, Kirk studied at the Dublin Society's School where he won prizes in 1797 and 1800. He later worked for Henry Darley, a skillful builder and stone-cutter from Meath, based in Abbey Street, Dublin. Kirk was acclaimed for his fine relief work on mantle-pieces and monuments. Much of his work can be seen in the Royal College of Surgeons, the Royal Dublin Society and in the library of Trinity College, Dublin. He worked on committees in the Royal Dublin Society and he was a member of the Royal Hibernian Academy. He executed numerous church memorials throughout the country. His favourite relief was one of the Good Samaritan, which was well suited for memorials to either doctors or clergymen. One of his earliest commissions, which appeared in 1809, was the statue of Nelson for Nelson's Pillar in O'Connell Street, Dublin. This monument was destroyed by an explosion on 8 March 1966. Thomas Stewart Kirk also known as Thomas Kirk Stewart (11 November 1848 – 8 October 1879) was an Irish sculptor. Life Thomas Kirk Stewart was born in New York on 11 November 1848. His mother was Mary Anne Kirk, the daughter of sculptor Thomas Kirk. His father was also Irish, who emigrated with his wife. She was an accomplished musician and Greek scholar. Kirk was orphaned at a young age, and returned to Dublin to be raised by the Kirk family, living with his uncle Joseph. Like his grandfather, aunt, and uncles, Stewart became a sculptor, specialising in portrait busts. He exhibited with the Royal Hibernian Academy from 1868 to 1873, when he started referring to himself as Thomas Stewart Kirk. One of his most notable works is the 1868 bust of the president of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, George Hornidge Porter.
