Early life and career Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Jones was the only surviving son of Philip Jones Jr., a commissioner of the peace and surveyor in that county. Jones read law to gain admission to the bar on motion before the Baltimore County Court in March of 1757, and was recorded as counsel of record in cases in that county. He did not regularly attended the courts at Annapolis, Maryland, but farmed a large tidewater plantation "on Patapsco Neck, in Baltimore". Theodorick Bland (judge)
Theodorick Bland (December 6, 1776 – November 16, 1846) was a Maryland attorney, statesman, a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the District of Maryland and Chancellor of Maryland. Education and early career Born in Dinwiddie County, Virginia, Bland was admitted to the bar in 1797. He was in private practice of law in Danville Virginia, then in Tennessee and Kentucky, and finally in Baltimore, Maryland. Around 1800, he settled in Baltimore after reportedly after "becoming dissatisfied with life on the frontier". He was elected a member of the Maryland House of Delegates in 1809 where he helped to write a new criminal code for the state. He was secretary of the Committee of Public Safety for Baltimore, beginning in 1812. Maryland
Maryland ( ) is a state in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. Fort McHenry
Fort McHenry is a historical American coastal pentagonal bastion fort on Locust Point, now a neighborhood of Baltimore, Maryland. It is best known for its role in the War of 1812, when it successfully defended Baltimore Harbor from an attack by the British navy from the Chesapeake Bay on September 13–14, 1814. It was first built in 1798 and was used continuously by the U.S. armed forces through World War I and by the Coast Guard in World War II. It was designated a national park in 1925, and in 1939 was redesignated a " National Monument and Historic Shrine". During the War of 1812 an American storm flag, , was flown over Fort McHenry during the bombardment. It was replaced early on the morning of September 14, 1814, with a larger American garrison flag, . The larger flag signaled American victory over the British in the Battle of Baltimore. Its name was changed on December 14, 2022, from the Maryland Court of Appeals, after a voter-approved change to the state constitution. Thomas Johnson (judge)
Thomas Johnson (November 4, 1732 – October 26, 1819) was an 18th-century United States, American lawyer, politician, and Patriot (American Revolution), patriot. He was a delegate to the First Continental Congress in 1774, where he signed the Continental Association; commander of the Maryland Militia (United States), militia in 1776; and elected List of Governors of Maryland, first (non-Colonial) governor of Maryland in 1777. Throughout his career, Johnson maintained a personal and political friendship with George Washington, who gave him a recess appointment as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, Supreme Court in August 1791. The Maryland General Assembly is the state legislature of the U.S. state of Maryland that convenes within the State House in Annapolis.
