Thomas J. Brown (judge)
Thomas Jefferson Brown (July 24, 1836 – May 26, 1915) was a justice of the Supreme Court of Texas from May 1893 to May 1915, serving as chief justice from January 1911 to May 1915. Born in Jasper County, Georgia, at the age of ten Brown moved with his family to Washington County, Texas. He attended the schools of Washington County, and received an LL.B. from Baylor University, in 1856, passing the bar exam the following year. He served in the American Civil War as a second lieutenant, and later captain, in the Twenty-second Texas Cavalry. The Supreme Court of Texas (SCOTX) is the court of last resort for civil matters (including juvenile delinquency cases, which are categorized as civil under the Texas Family Code) in the U.S. state of Texas. A different court, the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals (CCA), is the court of last resort in criminal matters. Nelson Phillips
Nelson Phillips (May 3, 1873 – March 31, 1939) was a justice of the Texas Supreme Court from April 1912 to November 1921, serving as chief justice from June 1915 to November 1921. Born in Jefferson, Texas, Phillips' father was a veteran of the Confederate States Army. The family moved to Hillsboro, Texas, where Phillips "attended local schools until the age of fifteen" before spending two years at Bingham Military School in Mebane, North Carolina. In 1894 he began reading law in the office of Thomas Slater Smith, gaining admission to the bar the following year. In 1904, Governor S. W. T. Lanham gave Phillips a two-year appointment to a seat on the Eighteenth Judicial District of Texas. After its expiration, Phillips moved to Dallas to practice law. Jasper County is a county located in the central portion of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 14,588, up from 13,900 in 2010. The county seat is Monticello.
