Thomas Innes Of Learney
Sir Thomas Innes of Learney (1893–1971) was a Scottish officer of arms who was Lord Lyon from 1945 to 1969. He was Carrick Pursuivant and Albany Herald in the 1920s and 1930s. He was a very active Lord Lyon, strongly promoting his views of what his office was through his writings and pronouncements in his Court. In 1950, he convinced the Scots Law Times to start publishing the decisions made in Lyon Court. By ruling on uncontested petitions, he was able to expound many of his theories in court but not under review of his superior court, and get them published in the judicial record. His treatise, ''Scots Heraldry'', was first published in 1934 when he was Carrick Pursuivant; then a second, enlarged edition came out in 1956, and it has practically eclipsed earlier works on the subject. Sir Malcolm Rognvald Innes of Edingight (25 May 1938 – 20 September 2020) was Lord Lyon King of Arms of Scotland from 1981 until 2001. Early life He was the son of Sir Thomas Innes of Learney (Lord Lyon from 1945 to 1969) and Lady Lucy Buchan, daughter of Norman Macleod Sinclair, 18th Earl of Caithness. He was educated at Edinburgh Academy and at the University of Edinburgh where he studied law. Career He was appointed a Writer to the Signet in 1964. His first heraldic appointment was as Falkland Pursuivant of Arms Extraordinary from 1957 to 1958, then as Carrick Pursuivant of Arms in Ordinary from 1958 to 1971 and as Marchmont Herald of Arms in Ordinary from 1971–81. Sir James Monteith Grant FRHSC (Hon) (19 October 1903 – 1 December 1981) was Lord Lyon King of Arms of Scotland from 1969 to 1981. Educated at the Edinburgh Academy and the University of Edinburgh, where he studied law, he was appointed a Writer to the Signet (WS) in 1927. His first heraldic appointment was as Carrick Pursuivant in 1946. He was promoted to Marchmont Herald in 1957 and then to Lord Lyon in 1969. He was also Secretary to the Order of the Thistle from 1971 until 1981. From his retirement as Lord Lyon in 1981, he again held the post of Marchmont Herald until his death later that year. He was a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland (FSA Scot), a Knight of the Venerable Order of St John (KStJ) from 1970, and a Commander 2nd Class of the Order of the Polar Star (KNO2kl) of Sweden from 1975. Lord Lyon King Of Arms
The Right Honourable the Lord Lyon King of Arms, the head of Lyon Court, is the most junior of the Great Officers of State in Scotland and is the Scottish official with responsibility for regulating heraldry in that country, issuing new grants of arms, and serving as the judge of the Court of the Lord Lyon, the oldest heraldic court in the world that is still in daily operation. The historic title of the post was the ''High Sennachie'', and he was given the title of Lord Lyon from the lion in the coat of arms of Scotland. The post was in the early nineteenth century held by an important nobleman, the Earl of Kinnoull, whose functions were in practice carried out by the Lyon-Depute. The practice of appointing Lyon-Deputes, however, ceased in 1866. Francis James Grant
Sir Francis James Grant (1863–1953) was a Scottish officer of arms who eventually rose to the office of Lord Lyon King of Arms. Grant served in the Court of the Lord Lyon as Carrick Pursuivant of Arms in Ordinary beginning on 17 May 1886. This appointment lasted until his promotion to the office of Rothesay Herald of Arms in Ordinary and Lyon Clerk and Keeper of the Records on 8 September 1898. On 10 May 1929, he was appointed Lord Lyon King of Arms and Secretary of the Order of the Thistle. He was made a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order in 1935. Grant retired from the office on 30 June 1945. He was the representative of Grant of Corrimony, and was the son of John Grant, Marchmont Herald of Arms in Ordinary from 1884 to 1888. He was elected a Fellow of the American Society of Genealogists in 1944. Charles Ian Fraser
Charles Ian Fraser of Reelig (1903 – 1963) was a Scottish British Army officer, historian and officer of arms. Fraser was a commissioned officer in the Lovat Scouts. He served in the Second World War and in 1942 he was awarded the Efficiency Decoration. In 1944 he was appointed a Deputy Lieutenant for Inverness-shire. He was confirmed in the honorary rank of Major in 1951. He was later granted the honorary rank of Colonel. He was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the 1962 New Year Honours for his work as Chairman of the Territorial and Auxiliary Forces Association of the County of Inverness. Sir Duncan Alexander Dundas Campbell, 3rd Baronet (4 December 1856 – 27 May 1926) was a Scottish British Army officer, historian and officer of arms. Campbell was the son of Sir Alexander Campbell, 2nd Baronet and Harriette Augusta Royer Collier, and he succeeded to his father's title on 11 December 1880. He served as an officer in the Black Watch. Between 1884 and 1895 he was Gentleman Usher of the Green Rod. Campbell retired from the army in 1893, with the rank of Honorary Major, late of the 3rd and 4th Battalion Highland Light Infantry.
