Thomas Cosmades
Thomas Cosmades (29 April 1924 in Istanbul – 20 September 2010) was a Turkish-born ethnic-Greek, later American national, Evangelical preacher and Bible translations into Turkish, translator of New Testament in Turkish. Cosmades was born of Greek parentage and served in the Turkish army during the Second World War. In 1949, he served as translator for American Aaron J. Smith during searches for Noah's Ark in Ararat. In 1950, he left Turkey for the US, followed by evangelical work in the Lebanon and then from 1968 was based in Germany as missionary at large for The Evangelical Alliance Mission. Bible Translations Into Turkish
The first translations of the Bible into Turkish date back to the 17th century, yet the first printed edition did not appear until the early 19th century. In more recent history, there has been a significant increase in the quality and quantity of translations. Old translation The Bible was first translated into Ottoman Turkish in the 17th century by Wojciech Bobowski, a Polish convert to Islam. He is also known as Ali Bey. The New Testament from his manuscript was printed in Paris in 1819, then revised and printed with the Old Testament in 1827. A new translation was published in Constantinople in 1878 and entitled ''Kitab-ı Mukaddes'' ("Holy Book"). Revised several times, this was the only Bible in the Arabic alphabet of Ottoman Turkish that stayed in print until the end of the Ottoman period. Searches For Noah's Ark
Searches for Noah's Ark have been reported since antiquity, as ancient scholars sought to affirm the historicity of the Genesis flood narrative by citing accounts of relics recovered from the Ark. With the emergence of biblical archaeology in the 19th century, the potential of a formal search attracted interest in alleged discoveries and hoaxes. By the 1940s, expeditions were being organized to follow up on these apparent leads. This modern search movement has been informally called "arkeology." In 2020, the Institute for Creation Research acknowledged that, despite many expeditions, Noah's Ark had not been found and is unlikely to be found. Many of the supposed findings and methods used in the search are regarded as pseudoscience and pseudoarchaeology by geologists and archaeologists. Translation is the communication of the meaning of a source-language text by means of an equivalent target-language text. The English language draws a terminological distinction (which does not exist in every language) between ''translating'' (a written text) and ''interpreting'' (oral or signed communication between users of different languages); under this distinction, translation can begin only after the appearance of writing within a language community. A translator always risks inadvertently introducing source-language words, grammar, or syntax into the target-language rendering.
