Thomas Cope (politician)
Thomas Cope (c.1814 – 3 April 1882) was a politician in colonial Victoria (Australia). Cope was born in Postgate, Staffordshire, England, and arrived in Melbourne around 1857. Cope was a member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly for Normanby from May 1868 to April 1877 and member for Portland from May 1877 to February 1880. Staffordshire (; postal abbreviation Staffs.) is a landlocked county in the West Midlands region of England. The Victorian Legislative Assembly is the lower house of the bicameral Parliament of Victoria in Australia; the upper house being the Victorian Legislative Council. Both houses sit at Parliament House in Spring Street, Melbourne. The presiding officer of the Legislative Assembly is the Speaker. There are presently 88 members of the Legislative Assembly elected from single-member divisions. The Electoral district of Normanby was an electoral district in the Legislative Assembly of Victoria, it covered an area from the South Australian border to Portland Bay.
