The Kenyan Women's Premier League is the top tier women's football league in the Kenyan football league system. It is controlled by the Football Kenya Federation. History The first women's football league in Kenya has been created in 1985. In 2010 no league was running any more because of financial problems. UNICEF and the Kenyan government then sponsored the new league. In 2013 the sponsorship was ended, leaving the league unfinished mid-season. In 2014, the league was named FKF Girls' Premier League. Thika Thika (pronounced [ˈθika]) is an industrial town and a major commerce hub in Kiambu County, Kenya, lying on the A2 road 42 kilometres (26 mi) Northeast of Nairobi, near the confluence of the Thika and Chania Rivers. Although Thika town is administratively in Kiambu County, the greater area comprises residential areas such as Bendor estate, Maporomoko, Thika Greens, Thika Golden Pearl, Bahati Ridge, and Thika Sports Club, among others that are within Murang'a County. As of the 2019 National Census, Thika had a population of 279,429, which is growing rapidly, as is the greater Nairobi area. Its elevation is approximately 1,631 metres (5,351 ft). Kiambu County is a county in the former Central Province of Kenya. Its capital is Kiambu and its largest town is Thika. Kiambu County is the second most populous after Nairobi County. Kiambu County borders Nairobi and Kajiado Counties to the South, Machakos to the East, Murang'a to the North and North East, Nyandarua to the North West, and Nakuru to the West and has a population of 2,417,735. The Kenyan Premier League (KPL), officially known as the FKF Premier League and as the BetKing Premier League (BPL) for sponsorship reasons, is a professional league for men's association football clubs in Kenya. Standing at the top of the Kenyan football league system, the league was formed in 1963 under the Kenya Football Federation but is now controlled by the Football Kenya Federation. It is contested by 18 clubs and operates on a promotion and relegation system with the Kenyan National Super League. Tusker are the current champions having won the 2021–22 season. Vihiga Queens FC, is a Kenyan professional women's football club based in Mbale, Vihiga County that competes in Kenyan Women's Premier League, the top tier of Kenyan football.
