Theo Budde
Theo Cornelis Budde (28 August 1889 in Ootmarsum - 8 August 1959 ) was a watchmaker, jeweler and antique dealer, as well as a poet who left a legacy in his hometown. Theo Budde was instrumental in establishing tourism in the well preserved medieval town of Ootmarsum. This remains the largest form of income for the local economy. He recognised the value of the old buildings, the original layout of the streets, and the many traditions that had survived the changing times. He was an active member of the Twensen Schrieversboond (the Twents writers guild). He loved Ootmarsum and wrote many poems about it. As a watchmaker, jeweler and antique dealer, his son Theo Budde and his wife Rie Veldboer continued the business. Ootmarsum
Ootmarsum is a city in the Dutch province of Overijssel. It is a part of the municipality of Dinkelland, and lies about 10 km north of Oldenzaal. In 2001, the city of Ootmarsum had 4227 inhabitants. Watchmaker
A watchmaker is an artisan who makes and repairs watches. Since a majority of watches are now factory-made, most modern watchmakers only repair watches. However, originally they were master craftsmen who built watches, including all their parts, by hand. Modern watchmakers, when required to repair older watches, for which replacement parts may not be available, must have fabrication skills, and can typically manufacture replacements for many of the parts found in a watch. Ton Schulten
Ton Schulten (born 25 April 1938, Ootmarsum, Overijssel) is a Dutch painter who mainly paints landscapes using bright blocks of colour. Schulten was one of six baker's children. He graduated from the Enschede Academy for Art and Industry in 1962 as a graphic designer and worked in advertising. In 1991 he was in a serious car accident on Tenerife, in which a friend was killed and he and his wife Ank Lammerink were put into a coma. After the accident his style changed and he began painting landscapes of the Twente area using initially primary colours and later also pastel shades. Ootmarsum houses Schulten's own gallery and a Ton Schulten museum, which opened in 1997. His work has great commercial success. He was knighted a member of the Order of Orange-Nassau in 2000.
