The Well (1997 Film)
''The Well'' is a 1997 Australian film directed by Samantha Lang and starring Pamela Rabe, Miranda Otto, Paul Chubb, and Frank Wilson. It is based on the 1986 novel of the same name by Elizabeth Jolley. Synopsis A young girl named Katherine and her older friend Hester live on an isolated farm run by Hester and her father Francis. Katherine works as a maid and wants to leave because there's too much work. Hester, however, becomes attracted to Katherine and holds her there, promising to give her less work in the future. When Francis dies, Hester decides to sell the farm for cash. They move to small cottage on the edge of the farm and plan to go to Europe. But a tragic accident and the theft of their money change their plans. Samantha Lang is an Australian film director and screenwriter. Her production company is Handmaid Media. Early life and education Samantha Lang was born in London, England, migrating to Australia with her family at the age of 14. She attended North Sydney Girls' High School, earning her HSC in 1985. She grew up watching European films, and was very influenced by the film ''Hiroshima Mon Amour''. In 1986 she spent a year at Universite de Grenoble, at Grenoble in France, studying French literature and linguistics. After beginning her university studies in 1987, in 1989 Lang was awarded a scholarship from Qantas to study at the Fachhochschule Wiesbaden in Germany for 10 months, where she focused on film and photography. She also attended FAMU, the Czech film school in Prague, which she said was a "life-changing experience" for her. Douglas Stephen Rae (born 8 November 1961) is an Australian AFI award-winning composer, musician and actor. Over his 30 year career, Stephen Rae has composed music for a varied roster of television, film, theatre and advertising. He has created scores for several iconic Australian television series, including Love My Way, Puberty Blues, Gallipoli and Safe Harbour, for which he won the 2018 FIPA (Federation Internationale de production Audiovisuale) Gold Prize for his music. Sandra Levy is an Australian film and television producer who has worked in both public and commercial television. Early life and family Levy was born in Sydney. Her parents were Jewish communists from whom she inherited a love of the arts and a capacity for intellectual jousting. She married her second husband Australian television director Michael Carson in the 1970s. They had one son together, Simon, but the couple later divorced.
