The Townhouse Gallery
The Townhouse Gallery was established in 1998 as an independent, non-profit art space in Cairo, Egypt, with a goal of making contemporary arts accessible to all without compromising creative practice. The Townhouse supports artistic work in a wide range of media through exhibitions, residencies for artists and curators, educational initiatives and outreach programs. By establishing local and international relationships, as well as diversifying both the practitioners and audiences of contemporary art, the Townhouse aims to support and expand the knowledge, appreciation and practice of contemporary arts in Egypt and the region. Exhibits and programs The gallery is located in downtown Cairo's bustling car mechanics district. It curates over twelve annual exhibitions in the 650-square-meter Factory and the First Floor gallery of its main building. Nermine Hammam
Nermine Hammam (born 1967) is an Egyptian artist who lives and works in Cairo and London. She was born in Cairo and later moved to England and then the United States in 1985. She received a BFA in film-making from the Tisch School of the Arts in New York City. She worked in film with Simon & Goodman and then with Egyptian director Youssef Chahine. She was a production assistant on the 1992 Spike Lee film ''Malcolm X''. Hammam subsequently worked as a graphic designer before moving on to visual arts and photography. As a female photographer, Hammam said she "entered this traditionally male-dominated space, camera in hand, inverting conventional power relationships to ‘shoot’ the soldiers. Visual Arts
The visual arts are art forms such as painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, photography, video, filmmaking, design, crafts and architecture. Hassan Khan (multimedia Artist)
Hassan Khan (born 1975) is a British-born Egyptian multimedia artist, musician, and writer who works with choreography, music, performance, sound, and video to create narratives. He resides and works in Cairo. He received a BA and an MA in English and comparative literature from the American University in Cairo. Youssef Nabil
Youssef Nabil was born on the 6th of November 1972. He is an Egyptian artist and photographer. Youssef Nabil began his photography career in 1992. Background Born in Cairo, Egypt, Nabil started his photography career in 1992, shortly before leaving to New York and Paris to work in prominent photographers' studios. In 1999, Youssef Nabil had his first solo exhibition in Cairo. Through the years he remained a close friend with the Egyptian-Armenian studio portrait photographer Van Leo (Leon Boyadjian, 1921–2001), who encouraged Nabil to leave to the West. In 2003, Youssef Nabil was awarded the Seydou Keita Prize in the Biennial of African Photography in Bamako. Warren Neidich
Warren Neidich ( ) is an American artist who lives in Berlin and Los Angeles. He was a professor at Kunsthochschule Weißensee School of Art, Berlin and visiting scholar at Otis College of Art and Design, Los Angeles. Neidich is founding director of the Saas-Fee Summer Institute of Art (SFSIA).
