The Standard (novel)
''The Standard'' (German: ''Die Standarte'') is a 1934 novel by the Austrian writer Alexander Lernet-Holenia. Set during the closing days of the First World War an officer of the Austro-Hungarian Army attempts to save his regimental colours from capture. They are taken back to Vienna and ceremonially burnt. Adaptations In 1935 it was turned into a German film '' My Life for Maria Isabella'' directed by Erich Waschneck. In 1977 it was remade as '' The Standard'' a co-production directed by Ottokar Runze and starring Simon Ward Simon Anthony Fox Ward (16 October 194120 July 2012) was a British stage and film actor. Alexander Lernet-Holenia
Alexander Lernet-Holenia (21 October 1897, in Vienna — 3 July 1976) was an Austrian poet, novelist, dramaturgist and writer of screenplays and historical studies who produced a heterogeneous literary opus that included poetry, psychological novels describing the intrusion of otherworldly or unreal experiences into reality, and recreational films. Youth and service in World War I Lernet-Holenia was born in 1897, as Alexander Marie Norbert Lernet to Alexander Lernet (an ocean liner officer) who had married his mother Sidonie (née Holenia) shortly before his birth. He attached his mother's maiden name to his family name only when he was formally adopted by Carinthian relatives of his mother (whose aristocratic family had lost most of its wealth after the war) in 1920. Austro-Hungarian Army
The Austro-Hungarian Army (, literally "Ground Forces of the Austro-Hungarians"; , literally "Imperial and Royal Army") was the ground force of the Austro-Hungarian Dual Monarchy from 1867 to 1918. ''My Life for Maria Isabella'' (German: ''Mein Leben für Maria Isabell'') is a 1935 German drama film directed by Erich Waschneck and starring Viktor de Kowa, Maria Andergast and Peter Voß. It is a military drama, the Maria Isabella of the title being the name of a regiment. Heavy cuts were imposed by the censors because of fears the film's mutiny scenes were too attractively portrayed. Erich Waschneck
Erich John Waschneck (29 April 1887, in Grimma, Kingdom of Saxony – 22 September 1970, in Berlin) was a German cameraman, director, screenwriter, and film producer. Early life Erich was the son of Karl Hermann Waschneck, a blacksmith, and his wife Therese Emilie, née Schneider. Waschneck went to finishing school at the Leipzig Art Academy and studied painting. Career He came in contact with the film industry in 1907 when he began to paint posters for films. He then worked as a still photographer and later as a camera assistant to cinematographer Fritz Arno Wagner . In 1921, he did his first work as a cameraman in the adaptation of the fairy tale ''The Little Muck'' by Wilhelm Hauff. From 1924 he worked as a director.
