The Standard, East Village
The Standard, East Village, formerly the Cooper Square Hotel, is a 21-story high-rise luxury hotel located at 25 Cooper Square in lower Manhattan, New York City. The tower was designed by Carlos Zapata Studio and structurally engineered by Leslie E. Robertson Associates. It has interiors by the Milanese designer Antonio Citterio. The hotel, which opened in December 2008, has 145 rooms and is the location of the Narcissa restaurant owned by André Balazs and Chef John Fraser. __NOTOC__ Cooper Square is a junction of streets in Lower Manhattan in New York City located at the confluence of the neighborhoods of Bowery to the south, NoHo to the west and southwest, Greenwich Village to the west and northwest, the East Village to the north and east, and the Lower East Side to the southeast. Description Beginning at its southern end where the Bowery crosses East 4th Street, the road then splits in two, both with Cooper Square addresses, until they cross Astor Place between East 8th Street and St. Marks Place and become Fourth Avenue (the western street) and Third Avenue (the eastern street). Because Bowery, Third Avenue and both sides of Cooper Square are two-way streets, the intersection is complex, and difficult for pedestrians to navigate, especially considering that it is part of a city-approved through-truck route. Carlos Zapata
Carlos Zapata (born 1961 in Rubio, Venezuela) is an American architect, with his office headquartered in New York City. Zapata is known for his work on the Bitexco Financial Tower in Ho Chi Minh City, the Cooper Square Hotel (now the Standard East Village) in Manhattan; the JW Marriott Hotel in the Convention Center Campus of Hanoi, Vietnam and Concourse J at Miami International Airport, among many other projects. Zapata is the principal of the self-titled architecture firm, "Carlos Zapata Studio". Previous to opening his own architectural practice, he was in partnership with Benjamin T. Wood (Wood + Zapata) and together with the Chicago-based firm of Lohan Caprile Goettsch, they designed the new Soldier Field in Chicago (completed in 2003). Antonio Citterio
Antonio Citterio (born 1950, in Meda) is an Italian architect, furniture designer and industrial designer who lives and works in Milan. He acquired a degree in architecture from Politecnico di Milano in 1972 and subsequently started working as a designer and industrial design consultant. From 1987 to 1996, he worked in association with Terry Dwan, designing buildings in Europe and Japan. In 2000, with Patricia Viel, founds "Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel" a cross-disciplinary practice for architecture and interior design. The firm works internationally, developing complex projects on all scales in collaboration with a qualified network of specialist consultants. André Tomes Balazs (born January 31, 1957) is an American businessman and hotelier. He is president and chief executive officer of André Balazs Properties, a portfolio of hotels across the United States and residences in New York state, especially in New York City. Early life and education Balazs was born in Boston, Massachusetts. His father, Endre Alexander Balazs, was a research professor at Harvard Medical School, founded the Retina Foundation and the Boston Biomedical Research Institute, and was the director of ophthalmic research at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center.
