The Road is the unofficial name for the road that connects the villages of Saba, Netherlands, a Caribbean island. It is nicknamed as "The Road That Couldn't Be Built." Saba (island)
Saba (; , ) is a Caribbean island which is the smallest special municipality (officially “public body”) of the Netherlands. It consists largely of the active volcano Mount Scenery, which at is the highest point of the entire Kingdom of the Netherlands. Fort Bay
Fort Bay is the official and only port on the island of Saba and sits on the south side of the island, about by road from The Bottom. The port is very important for the island as most of its supplies arrive here by boat. The port currently has two piers. The Bottom
The Bottom (formerly ''Botte'') is the capital and largest town of the island of Saba, the Caribbean Netherlands, and is the first stop on the way from Saba's Port in Fort Bay towards the rest of the island. In 2001, it had 462 inhabitants of the total 1,349 islanders. History The Bottom was founded in 1632 by colonists from Zeeland. The original name of the town was ''De Botte'', old Dutch for "The Bowl", referring to its geographical position in a valley surrounded by the various mountains. The island attracted Irish and Scottish settlers, and the main language became English. "The Bottom" is an English corruption of this name. Windwardside
Windwardside is the second largest town on the island of Saba, aptly named for being on the windward side of the island. Geography The hike up the stairs to the top of Mount Scenery can begin from the road just outside Windwardside. Tourism Two banks and several dive shops as well as grocery stores, gift shops, etc. are located here. There is also a maritime museum full of Saban history. Windwardside village also has several hotels and inns which serve mostly tourists who come to the island to dive and enjoy the Saban nature. Mount Scenery
Mount Scenery is an active volcano in the Caribbean Netherlands. Its lava dome forms the summit of the Saba island stratovolcano. At an elevation of , it is the highest point in both the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and, since the dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles on 10 October 2010, the highest point in the Netherlands proper. The Saba volcano is potentially dangerous; the latest eruption was in or around the year 1640 and included explosions and pyroclastic flows. On 2 September 2019, Mt. Scenery Nature Park was elevated to the status of national park. It has a hiking trail to its summit, which is one of Saba's biggest tourist attractions. Along the way up the mountain can be found all of the climate zones on Saba, including a cloud forest at the summit. Zion's Hill
Zion's Hill, also known by its former name Hell's Gate, is a town on the Dutch Caribbean island of Saba. History Hell's Gate was officially named "Zion's Hill" after complaints from the church forced the island's government to change the name. However, "Hell's Gate" is still commonly used by many Sabans and tourists. Main sights Overview Hell's Gate is home to the Queen of The Holy Rosary Church, a stone structure built in 1962, as well as a community center where visitors can purchase locally made Saba lace and Saba spice, a locally brewed rum drink. Hell's Gate Lower Hell's Gate is home to a now-closed sulfur mine where visitors may explore with caution. Hell's Gate is also the start to the Crispin trail. Flavius Josephus (; grc-gre, Ἰώσηπος, ; 37 – 100) was a first-century Romano-Jewish historian and military leader, best known for ''The Jewish War'', who was born in Jerusalem—then part of Roman Judea—to a father of priestly descent and a mother who claimed royal ancestry. He initially fought against the Romans during the First Jewish–Roman War as head of Jewish forces in Galilee, until surrendering in 67 AD to Roman forces led by Vespasian after the six-week siege of Yodfat.
