The Real Folk Blues (Muddy Waters Album)
''The Real Folk Blues'' is a 1965 compilation album of Muddy Waters recordings, released on the Chess record label in January 1965. The album was the first release of ''The Real Folk Blues'' series and has since been re-released in multiple formats. The album features some of Waters' first recordings. Artwork and packaging The cover art photography and design on ''The Real Folk Blues'' was done by Don S. Bronstein and the sleeve notes for the original album were done by Willie Dixon. On a reissue of the album, new liner notes were authored by Cary Baker. Recording background Muddy Waters started out recording for Aristocrat Records in 1947, a precursor of Chess Records. These early recordings feature him alongside Ernest "Big" Crawford. Later when Leonard and Phil Chess took over the record label, Muddy used a more electric backing band featuring members such as Little Walter. Muddy Waters
McKinley Morganfield (April 4, 1913 April 30, 1983), known professionally as Muddy Waters, was an American blues singer and musician who was an important figure in the post-war blues scene, and is often cited as the "father of modern Chicago blues". His style of playing has been described as "raining down Delta beatitude". Mannish Boy
"Mannish Boy" (or "Manish Boy" as it was first labeled) is a blues standard written by Muddy Waters, Mel London, and Bo Diddley (with Waters and Diddley being credited under their birth names). First recorded in 1955 by Waters, it serves as an "answer song" to Bo Diddley's " I'm a Man", which was in turn inspired by Waters' and Willie Dixon's "Hoochie Coochie Man". "Mannish Boy" features a repeating stop-time figure on one chord throughout the song. Although the song contains sexual boasting, its repetition of "I'm a man, I spell M, A child, N" was understood as political. Waters had recently left the South for Chicago. ''Folk Singer'' is the fourth studio album by Muddy Waters, released in January 1964 by Chess Records. The album features Waters on Steel-string guitar, acoustic guitar, backed by Willie Dixon on string bass, Clifton James on drums, and Buddy Guy on acoustic guitar. It is Waters's only all-acoustic album. Numerous reissues of ''Folk Singer'' include bonus tracks from two subsequent sessions, in April 1964 and October 1964. Despite not charting in any country, ''Folk Singer'' received critical acclaim; most reviewers praised its high-quality sound, especially on remastered versions, as well as the instrumentation. Philip Chess (born Fiszel Czyż; March 27, 1921 – October 18, 2016) was a Polish-born American record producer and company executive, the co-founder with his brother of Chess Records. Early life Chess was born to a Polish-Jewish family in the village of Motal, then in eastern Poland and now part of Belarus. He and his brother Lejzor, sister Malka and mother followed their father to Chicago in 1928. The family name was changed to Chess, with Lejzor becoming Leonard and Fiszel becoming Philip. Career Chess served in the army during World War II. In 1946, after leaving the Army, Phil joined Leonard in running a popular club, the Macomba Lounge. Aristocrat Records
Aristocrat Records, sometimes billed as the Aristocrat of Records, was founded in April 1947 by Charles and Evelyn Aron, together with their partners Fred and Mildred Brount and Art Spiegel. By September Leonard Chess had invested in the young record company. Over time, Leonard bought the others out, and by 1948, only he and Evelyn Aron ran the firm. By early 1950 Leonard and his brother Phil had become the sole owners, and in June of that year they changed the company's name from Aristocrat to Chess Records. The Aristocrat brand was officially discontinued in January 1951. In three years, Aristocrat released 183 songs, and recorded 18 more that were released under the new Chess label.
