''Folk Singer'' is the fourth studio album by Muddy Waters, released in January 1964 by Chess Records. The album features Waters on Steel-string guitar, acoustic guitar, backed by Willie Dixon on string bass, Clifton James on drums, and Buddy Guy on acoustic guitar. It is Waters's only all-acoustic album. Numerous reissues of ''Folk Singer'' include bonus tracks from two subsequent sessions, in April 1964 and October 1964. Despite not charting in any country, ''Folk Singer'' received critical acclaim; most reviewers praised its high-quality sound, especially on remastered versions, as well as the instrumentation. In 2003, the album was ranked number 280 on ''Rolling Stone'' magazine's list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, the 500 greatest albums of all time. ''Folksinger'' is an album by folk singer-songwriter Phranc, released in 1985. Phranc's first solo LP fused elements of her punk rock past with acoustic folk music. She covers Bob Dylan's "The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll," comments on the image of girl groups ("Everywhere I Go (I Hear the Go Go's)"), and relays the personal tragedy of suicide in "Lifelover." ''Folksinger'' was released on Rhino Records, and was licensed to Island Records in 1990. "Everywhere I Go (I Hear the Go-Go's)" is a bonus track on the Island version. Critical reception AllMusic wrote that "acoustic folk music had yet to be embraced by the punk/new wave underground, making ''Folksinger'' a watershed album." James "Pee Wee" Madison
James "Pee Wee" Madison (May 4, 1935 – January 7, 2008) was an American blues guitar player. Early life Born in Osceola, Arkansas, he moved to Chicago in the late 1950s, molding his musicianship on that of Little Walter. His big chance came when he joined the band of Muddy Waters in 1963, replacing guitarist Pat Hare who was incarcerated for killing his girlfriend. Career Starting in 1964, Madison played on most of Muddy Waters' recordings. He played with Muddy Waters' band until the ending of Muddy Waters' world tour in 1973, mostly playing rhythm guitar on an upside-down Fender Mustang. While traveling through Illinois with Muddy Waters on Oct. 26, 1969, Madison was injured in an accident. He spent two days in the hospital recovering from his injuries. "Got My Mojo Working" is a blues song written by Preston "Red" Foster and first recorded by R&B singer Ann Cole in 1956. Foster's lyrics describe several amulets or talismans, called ''mojo'', which are associated with hoodoo, an early African-American folk-magic belief system. In 1957, Muddy Waters adapted the song with some different lyrics and a new musical arrangement. It was a feature of his performances throughout his career, with a live version recorded in 1960 identified as the best known. "Trouble No More" is an upbeat blues song first recorded by Muddy Waters in 1955. It is a variation on "Someday Baby Blues", recorded by Sleepy John Estes in 1935. The Allman Brothers Band recorded both studio and live versions of the song in the late 1960s and 1970s. Background Several blues musicians have interpreted and recorded variations on "Some Baby Blues". "Muddy Waters calls his 'Trouble No More' and Big Maceo titled his 'Worried Life Blues'. "Five Long Years" is a song written and recorded by blues vocalist and pianist Eddie Boyd in 1952. Called one of the "few postwar blues standards hat hasretained universal appeal", Boyd's "Five Long Years" reached number one on the ''Billboard'' R&B chart. American Folk Blues Festival
The American Folk Blues Festival was a music festival that toured Europe as an annual event for several years beginning in 1962. It introduced audiences in Europe, including the UK, to leading blues performers of the day such as Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, John Lee Hooker and Sonny Boy Williamson, most of whom had never previously performed outside the US. Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab (MFSL or MoFi) is a record label specializing in the production of audiophile issues. The company produces reissued vinyl LP records, compact discs, and Super Audio CDs and other formats. Electric blues refers to any type of blues music distinguished by the use of electric amplifier, amplification for musical instruments.
