Cliff Green
Clifford Green OAM (6 December 1934 – 4 December 2020), born in Melbourne, Australia, was an Australian screen writer, whose best-known work is the script for the film '' Picnic at Hanging Rock'' (1975). Career Green spent his early working life as a country school teacher, which was reflected in his script for the 1974 ABC TV series, ''Marion''. He was able to write in a wide variety of genres, and his screenplay for Peter Weir’s ''Picnic At Hanging Rock'' was a landmark in the renaissance of the Australian film industry in the 1970s. In 1981, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation produced ''I Can Jump Puddles'', a mini-series written by Green, based on Alan Marshall's autobiographical stories. Mac Gudgeon
Mac Gudgeon (2 March 1949 – 25 May 2023) was an Australian film and television screenwriter. Biography Career Gudgeon was perhaps best known for writing the television mini-series'' Waterfront'', ''The Petrov Affair'', '' Killing Time'' and for co-writing ''The Secret River''. Gudgeon's film screenwriting include '' Last Ride'' and he co-wrote the screenplays for ''Ground Zero'', '' The Delinquents'' and ''Wind''. Gudgeon served as president of the Australian Writers' Guild from 1998 to 2000, and received a lifetime membership in 2002. Gudgeon died on 25 May 2023, at the age of 74. The Petrov Affair was a Cold War spy incident in Australia, concerning the defection of Vladimir Petrov, a KGB officer, from the Soviet embassy in Canberra in 1954. The defection led to a Royal Commission and the resulting controversy contributed to the Australian Labor Party split of 1955. Background Petrov, despite his relatively junior diplomatic status, was a colonel in (what became in 1954) the KGB, the Soviet secret police, and his wife was an officer at the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MVD). The Petrovs had been sent to the Canberra embassy in 1951 by the Soviet security chief, Lavrentiy Beria. After Joseph Stalin's death in March 1953, Beria had been arrested and shot by Stalin's successors, and Vladimir Petrov evidently feared that, if he returned to the Soviet Union, he would be purged as a "Beria man". Evdokia Alexeyevna Petrova (russian: Евдоки́я Алексе́евна Петро́ва; – ) was a Russian spy in Australia in the 1950s. She was the wife of Vladimir Petrov, and came to prominence with him during the Petrov Affair. Life Raised in the Soviet Union, Petrova worked as a bureaucrat in the state-run forced labor camps or gulags. In 1951, she was posted with her husband as a diplomat to Australia, though her real work was as a spy, in the rank of captain, against the Australian government. In this capacity she provided clerical, cypher, and operational assistance to the Soviet embassy in Canberra. With her husband she defected to Australia in 1954. Michael Bialoguski (19 March 191729 July 1984) was a Polish-Australian medical practitioner, musician and intelligence agent, who played a significant part in the 1954 Petrov Affair. Biography Michael Bialoguski was born to Polish Jewish parents in 1917 in Kiev, then part of the Russian Empire and now the capital of Ukraine. When he was three years old, Bolshevik forces were on the point of shooting him and his entire family, when his father bribed them with his gold watch; they were forced to flee immediately, and made their way to Wilno, Poland (now Vilnius, Lithuania). He attended school there, studied violin at the Vilnius Conservatorium, receiving a diploma in 1935, and commenced a course in medicine at the Stefan Batory University. He had an early short-lived marriage. He was jailed by the invading Soviet forces in 1939.
