The Nevada Sagebrush
''The Nevada Sagebrush'' is the independent student newspaper of the University of Nevada, Reno. It was founded on October 19, 1893, as ''The Student Record'', against the wishes of the Nevada Board of Regents. In 1910, the name was changed to ''The Sagebrush'' and then in 2004, to ''The Nevada Sagebrush''. The newspaper is printed every Tuesday morning, and employs about 15 Nevada students. Prior to 2004, the newspaper called itself simply the ''Sagebrush''. The newspaper was given an Associated Collegiate Press Pacemaker Award for work completed during the 2007–2008, 2008–2009, 2011–2012 and most recently, 2014–15, school years. It was also a finalist for a Pacemaker at the 2006, 2007 and 2015 ACP student journalism awards. It has won the best of show award at the fall 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008 ACP national conferences in its category (weekly broadsheet at a four-year university). Reno ( ) is a city in the northwest section of the U.S. state of Nevada, along the Nevada-California border, about north from Lake Tahoe, known as "The Biggest Little City in the World". Geoff Schumacher (born November 11, 1965) is a journalist and author who lives in Las Vegas, Nevada. He is the author of two books focusing on the history of Las Vegas. Early life Schumacher, who was born in Madison, Wisconsin, moved when he was 11 to Las Vegas. He graduated from Pahrump Valley High School in 1984, and received his bachelor's degree in journalism in 1988 from the University of Nevada, Reno. The National Pacemaker Awards are awards for excellence in American student journalism, given annually since 1927. The awards are generally considered to be the highest national honors in their field, and are unofficially known as the "Pulitzer Prizes of student journalism". The National Scholastic Press Association administers the contest for high school programs, while the Associated Collegiate Press administers the college and university contests. Pacemakers are awarded annually at the JEA/NSPA National Conference (for high schools) and the ACP/CMA National College Media Convention (for colleges) in the following categories: Newspaper, Online, Yearbook/Magazine, and Broadcast.
