The Munathara Initiative
The Munathara Initiative is a non-profit debate initiative based in Tunis, Tunisia and Washington, D.C., aimed at promoting debate and free speech for youth, women, and marginalized communities in the Arabic-speaking world. Munathara organizes both online and live panel debates in cities across the Middle East and North Africa. History The Munathara Initiative was established in 2012 by Belabbes Benkredda, an Algerian-German civic innovator and government consultant. Benkredda founded the Munathara Initiative's predecessor, Dubai Debates, in 2011, as an independent platform for discussing important issues facing the Arab world. The project was funded by groups such as KAS ( Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung) and Vital Voices. Yassine Brahim
Yassine Brahim ( ar, ياسين إبراهيم; born 20 February 1966 in Mahdia, Tunisia) is a Tunisian engineer, manager and politician. Leader of the secular liberal Afek Tounes party, he was appointed Minister of Development, Investment and International Cooperation in February 2015. Early life and education Born 1966 in Mahdia, Brahim was raised in Bizerte by Tunisian Air Force officer Mahfoudh Brahim and his mother, a teacher and daughter of revolutionary Abdelaziz Mastouri. When he was ten years old, they moved to Carthage where Brahim visited secondary school. Next Libyan Presidential Election
The Libyan presidential election had originally been planned for 10 December 2018, but was delayed due to Khalifa Haftar's Western Libya campaign. The election was thereafter scheduled to be held on 24 December 2021 but was indefinitely postponed after the head of High National Election Commission (HNEC) ordered the dissolution of the electoral committees nationwide. 2012 Egyptian Presidential Debate
The 2012 Egyptian presidential debate was the first-ever presidential debate held in Egyptian history as well as the first in any Arabic-speaking nation-state. Held in preparation for the upcoming presidential election, it was held between presidential candidates Abdel Moneim Aboul Fotouh (independent, endorsed by Al-Nour Party, moderate Islamic Al-Wasat Party and Egyptian Current Party) and Amr Moussa (independent). It was broadcast live on ONtv on May 10, 2012 and moderated by Yosri Fouda of ONTV and Mona el-Shazly of Dream TV. 2019 Tunisian Presidential Election
Presidential elections were held in Tunisia on 15 September 2019, the second direct vote for the presidency since the 2011 revolution. The elections had originally been planned for 17 and 24 November, but were brought forward after the death of incumbent President Beji Caid Essebsi on 25 July to ensure that a new president would take office within 90 days, as required by the constitution. As no candidate received a majority of the vote in the first round, a runoff was held on 13 October between the top two candidates, Kais Saied and Nabil Karoui. Saied won the second round with 72.7% of the vote. The Lebanese liquidity crisis is an ongoing financial crisis affecting Lebanon, that became fully apparent in August 2019, and was further exacerbated by both the COVID-19 pandemic in Lebanon (which began in 2020) and the 2020 Beirut port explosion. The roots of the crisis run deep and the country experienced liquidity shortages in the years prior to 2019 but the full extent of the fragility of the economy were concealed by the financial engineering of the governor of the central bank. The Salafi movement or Salafism () is a reform branch movement within Sunni Islam that originated during the nineteenth century.
