Milwaukee PBS is the collective brand for two Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) member television stations licensed to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, United States: WMVS (channel 10) and WMVT (channel 36). Both stations are owned and operated by the Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC). John Gurda
John Gurda (born 9 June 1947 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin) is an American writer and historian. Gurda's book, '' The Making of Milwaukee'', was turned into an Emmy Award-winning documentary series by Milwaukee PBS. He is an eight-time winner of the Wisconsin Historical Society’s Award of Merit. He is also a local history columnist for Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Education John Gurda graduated Marquette University High School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He holds a B.A. in English from Boston College and M.A. in Cultural Geography from University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. Gurda has been described as a non-academic historian and is widely regarded as one of the most prolific historians of Milwaukee. Professional Work John Gurda is the author of twenty-two books, including histories of Milwaukee-area neighborhoods, industries, and places of worship. History Of Milwaukee
Milwaukee, Wisconsin's history of over 160 years of immigration (of Germans, Irish, Yankees, Poles, Blacks and Hispanics), politics (including a strong Socialist movement), and industry (including machines, cheese, and beer), has given it a distinctive heritage. To 1820 The first recorded inhabitants of the Milwaukee area are the Menominee, Fox, Mascouten, Sauk, Potawatomi, Ojibwe (all Algic/Algonquian peoples) and Ho-Chunk (Winnebago) (a Siouan people) Native American tribes. Many of these people had lived around Green Bay before migrating to the Milwaukee area around the time of European immigration. The name "Milwaukee" comes from an Algonquian word ''Millioke'', meaning "Good", "Beautiful" and "Pleasant Land" (cf.
