John Gurda
John Gurda (born 9 June 1947 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin) is an American writer and historian. Gurda's book, '' The Making of Milwaukee'', was turned into an Emmy Award-winning documentary series by Milwaukee PBS. He is an eight-time winner of the Wisconsin Historical Society’s Award of Merit. He is also a local history columnist for Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Education John Gurda graduated Marquette University High School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He holds a B.A. in English from Boston College and M.A. in Cultural Geography from University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. Gurda has been described as a non-academic historian and is widely regarded as one of the most prolific historians of Milwaukee. Bay View is a neighborhood in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, United States, North America on the shores of Lake Michigan, south of the downtown area and north of the City of St. Francis. Bay View existed as an independent village for eight years, from 1879 to 1887.Turner, p. 51. History Settlement The first permanent European settlement of the Bay View area was in 1834. Hales Corners
Hales Corners is a village in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 7,692 at the 2010 census. History The land in the area that would eventually encompass the Village was first claimed as French, then British, and eventually as the Northwest Territory of the United States in 1783. It was the land of the Potawatomi Indians until they were forced to move from their land in 1838. They were the dominant tribe in southeast Wisconsin with large villages. Like the Europeans that arrived later, they planted crops, but theirs were beans, squash, and corn. By engaging in the fur trade, the Potawatomi learned to speak French and English, and they eventually intermarried with the Europeans.
