The Living Soap
''The Living Soap'' was a BBC North fly on the wall documentary series broadcast in 1993, which set out to show the everyday lives of six students sharing a house in Manchester. The six chosen students gave up their privacy for one year in return for free rent and the chance to be on television. Out of the original six participants, four of them left the show and were replaced by other willing students, chosen by a public telephone vote. Although the series was groundbreaking, ''The Living Soap'' attracted the wrong kind of controversy and was taken off the air after about five months, though filming continued. The remaining housemates appeared in two one-hour specials later on in 1994. Paul Watson is a British television documentary filmmaker. Biography Born on 17 February 1942 in Paddington, London and grew up in Wood Green. Family moved to Bolton, Lancashire after father obtained work in the textile mills. Attended Altrincham Grammar School, Cheshire. Attained A Level Art aged 16. Attended Manchester Regional College of Art, then Royal College of Art, London 1963-1966. Started working for the BBC in the mid-1960s, first job as researcher on ''Whicker's World.'' Given own documentary series ''A Year in the Life,'' followed by singles for the ''Tuesday's Documentary'' strand. In 1974, made ''The Family,'' one of his most well known programmes. In the following decade, worked with Egyptologist John Romer and made singles for ''Real Lives'' and ''40 Minutes'' strands, including ''The Fishing Party'' in 1985. Fly On The Wall
Fly on the wall is a style of documentary-making used in film and television production. The name derived from the idea that events are seen candidly, as a fly on a wall might see them. In the purest form of fly-on-the-wall documentary-making, the camera crew works as unobtrusively as possible; however, it is also common for participants to be interviewed, often by an off-camera voice. Decades before structured reality shows became popular, the BBC had broadcast fly-on-the-wall film ''Royal Family'' (a 1969 documentary produced in association with ITV), while 1974's '' The Family'', is said to be the earliest example of a reality TV docusoap on the BBC. In the late 1990s, Chris Terrill's docusoap series '' The Cruise'' made a star of singer and TV personality Jane McDonald, while Welsh cleaner Maureen Rees became popular after her appearances on BBC One's ''Driving School''. Spencer Campbell
Spencer Campbell (born 1953) is an English television producer and director.
