The Laff Stop
The Laff Stop was a comedy club, with locations in Texas and California. History and venues The Laff Stop was created by Michael Callie and originated in Newport Beach, California and featured comics such as Steve Martin, David Letterman, Bill Hicks and Robin Williams. There were also Laff Stop clubs in Montclair, California Palm Springs, CA and Austin, Texas (which changed its name to Cap City Comedy Club in 1996). The location in Houston, Texas was open since 1977, and was one of the most successful clubs through the 1990s. It closed on December 19, 2009, in a surprise announcement. The Houston Laff Stop changed locations a few times during its existence, the last stop becoming an upstairs strip mall location at Waugh and Allen Parkway. The previous location on West Gray Street is now a bar called Local Pour. The club later served as a starting point and hometown club for such acts as Ralphie May and Brett Butler. A comedy club is a venue—typically a nightclub, bar, hotel, casino, or restaurant—where people watch or listen to performances, including stand-up comedians, improvisational comedians, impersonators, impressionists, magicians, ventriloquists, and other comedy acts. The term "comedy club" usually refers to venues that feature stand-up comedy, as distinguished from improvisational theatres, which host improv or sketch comedy, and variety clubs (which may also host musical acts). Types Comedy clubs are usually broken down by comedians into "A rooms", "B rooms", and "C rooms": *A rooms usually cater to people with movie deals, people with television shows, and generally well known acts. *B rooms are where the best aspects of both A rooms and C rooms meet. ''Strategic Grill Locations'' is a comedy album from Mitch Hedberg. It is a recording of a performance at The Laff Stop comedy club in Houston, Texas, on September 7, 1999. The album was originally self-published by Hedberg and sold through his website and at shows. In conjunction with the release of his second album, ''Mitch All Together'', the Comedy Central label also re-released this album, editing out some jokes that did not get much reaction. Ron White
Ron White (born December 18, 1956) is an American stand-up comedian, actor and author, best known as a charter member of the Blue Collar Comedy Tour. Nicknamed "Tater Salad", he is the author of the book ''I Had the Right to Remain Silent But I Didn't Have the Ability'', which appeared on the ''New York Times'' best seller list. Biography White was born in Fritch, Texas on December 18, 1956. He joined the U.S. Navy at age 17 and served on the auxiliary rescue and salvage ship USS ''Conserver'' near the end of the Vietnam War. Before pursuing comedy professionally, White briefly lived in Mexico, where he bought a pottery factory. Doug Stanhope (born March 25, 1967) is an American stand-up comedian, author, political activist and podcast host. His stand-up material favors caustic and often obscene observations of life in the style of Bill Hicks and Bill Burr, which he delivers while consuming alcohol. Politically, he has favored libertarianism and once endorsed the Free State Project, a proposed political migration of at least 20,000 libertarians to a single low-population state to foster libertarian ideas. Early life Stanhope was born in Worcester, Massachusetts, to a middle class family. His father Russ was head of science at Stanhope's school, and died in 2000. The attached DVD contains Dane's appearances on ''Comedy Central Presents'' (both the edited-for-television and unedited hour-long versions), ''Comics Come Home'' 5, and ''Premium Blend''. As of 2014, sales in the United States have exceeded 1,404,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
