The Jackets Green
''Jackets Green'' is an Irish ballad by Michael Scanlan concerning an Irish woman and her beloved, Donal, an Irish soldier fighting in the Jacobite army of Patrick Sarsfield in the Williamite War. Like many "patriotic" Irish ballads, it pays little heed to actual history, containing at its core the fallacious claim that Sarsfield's men wore green uniforms. In fact, the regiments of the Irish Brigade (France), initiated by the Jacobite soldiers under Sarsfield's command wore red uniforms. Background The French and Irish troops fighting for James II of England and VII of Scotland (known as Séamas a' Caca, or James the Shit, in Irish after he fled the Battle of the Boyne, abandoning his supporters) had fought their way back to Limerick. Patrick Sarsfield, Earl Of Lucan
Patrick Sarsfield, 1st Earl of Lucan, ga, Pádraig Sáirseál, circa 1655 to 21 August 1693, was an Irish soldier, and leading figure in the Jacobite army during the 1689 to 1691 Williamite War in Ireland. Born into a wealthy Catholic family, Sarsfield joined a regiment recruited by James Scott, Duke of Monmouth for the 1672 to 1674 Third Anglo-Dutch War, a subsidiary of the Franco-Dutch War. After England made peace, his regiment served in the French Rhineland campaign, and when the war ended in 1678, he returned to England. Following the so-called Popish Plot, Catholics were barred from the English military, and for the next few years Sarsfield led a precarious life on the fringes of London society. The Battle of Landen, also known as Neerwinden, took place on 29 July 1693, during the Nine Years' War near Landen in modern Belgium. A French army under Marshal Luxembourg defeated an Allied force led by William III. By 1693, all combatants were struggling with the financial and material costs of the conflict. Hoping to end the war with a favourable negotiated peace, Louis XIV of France decided first to improve his position by taking the offensive. Luxembourg, French commander in the Spanish Netherlands saw a chance to engage William near Landen. The allies were in a strong but extremely dangerous position, with a river to their rear. Mahoonagh or Castlemahon () is a village and civil parish in County Limerick, Ireland. The village lies four kilometres south east of the town of Newcastle West. Michael Scanlan (poet)
Michael Scanlan (10 November 1833 – 6 March 1917) was an Irish nationalist, editor, poet and writer. He was known as the "Fenian poet" and is remembered as the author of stirring Irish ballads such as the "Bold Fenian Men" and "The Jackets Green". Life He was born in Castlemahon, County Limerick. He emigrated to the United States at fifteen years of age and with his brothers, John and Mortimer, settled in Chicago. They started a sweets (candy) business which became very successful.
