The Island is an island in the Bear River, at the head of Cutler Reservoir, near Cache Junction in Cache County, Utah. Bear River (Great Salt Lake)
The Bear River is the largest tributary of the Great Salt Lake, draining a mountainous area and farming valleys northeast of the lake and southeast of the Snake River Plain. It flows through southwestern Wyoming, southeastern Idaho, and northern Utah, in the United States. Approximately long it is the longest river in North America that does not ultimately reach the sea. History The river valley was inhabited by the Shoshone people. Fur trappers from the Hudson's Bay Company began to penetrate the area, exploring south from the Snake River as early as 1812. John C. Frémont explored the area in 1843, and the Mormon Trail crossed the Bear River south of Evanston. The California and Oregon Trails followed the Bear River north out of Wyoming to Fort Hall in Idaho. Cutler Reservoir
Cutler Reservoir is a reservoir located in Cache Valley in the U.S. state of Utah. It is an impoundment on the Bear River built for irrigation, flood control, and water supply. The concrete gravity-arch Cutler Dam, built in 1927, is located in easternmost Box Elder County, although the reservoir is almost entirely in Cache County, to its east. Cutler contains several fish species, including catfish, walleye, and bass. Cache Junction (pronounced ) is a census-designated place (CDP) in Cache County, Utah, United States. The population was 38 at the 2010 census. It is included in the Logan, Utah-Idaho (partial) Metropolitan Statistical Area. Geography Cache Junction is located at (41.836370, -112.000202). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 6.0 square miles (15.6 km2), of which 5.7 square miles (14.7 km2) is land and 0.3 square mile (0.9 km2) (5.82%) is water. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there were 37 people, 13 households, and 10 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 6.5 people per square mile (2.5/km2). Cache County ( ) is a county located in the Wasatch Front region of Utah. As of the 2020 United States Census the population was 133,154. Its county seat and largest city is Logan. Cache County is included in Logan metropolitan area. History Indigenous peoples occupied the valleys of present Cache County as much as 10,000 BCE. Near the present epoch, the valley served the Plains Indians and the Shoshone. Trappers and explorers visited the area in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. John Henry Weber and Jim Bridger came through in 1824; Peter Skene Ogden and James Beckwourth passed through in 1825. In July 1855, a group of Mormon settlers drove a herd of cattle into the valley and camped at Haw Bush Spring (present Elkhorn Ranch). Oxbow Lake
An oxbow lake is a U-shaped lake or pool that forms when a wide meander of a river is cut off, creating a free-standing body of water. In South Texas, oxbows left by the Rio Grande are called '' resacas''. In Australia, oxbow lakes are called billabongs. The word "oxbow" can also refer to a U-shaped bend in a river or stream, whether or not it is cut off from the main stream. Geology An oxbow lake forms when a meandering river erodes through the neck of one of its meanders. This takes place because meanders tend to grow and become more curved over time. The river then follows a shorter course that bypasses the meander. The entrances to the abandoned meander eventually silt up, forming an oxbow lake.
