The Grand Duel
''The Grand Duel'' (Italian: ''Il Grande duello''), also known as ''Storm Rider'' and ''The Big Showdown'', is a 1972 Spaghetti Western film directed by Giancarlo Santi, who had previously worked as Sergio Leone's assistant director on ''The Good, the Bad and the Ugly'' and ''Once Upon a Time in the West''. The film stars Lee Van Cleef as a sheriff who seeks justice for a man accused of murder. Plot Philip Wermeer has escaped from prison where he serves a sentence for the murder of Ebenezer Saxon, the patriarch of Saxon city, who in his turn is believed to be behind the murder of Wermeer's father. Wermeer is holed up in Gila Bend by a swarm of bounty killers, who want his $3,000 reward, posted by Saxon's three sons David, Eli and Adam. A sheriff named Clayton arrives on a stagecoach and bosses his way through the cordon set up by the local lawmen. Giancarlo Santi
Giancarlo Santi (7 October 1939 – 22 February 2021) was an Italian filmmaker. Born in Rome, Santi began his career as production assistant of Gian Vittorio Baldi, later became assistant director of Marco Ferreri ('' L'ape regina'', '' La Donna scimmia'', ''Controsesso'', ''Marcia nuziale''). Santi collaborated with Sergio Leone on ''The Good, the Bad and the Ugly'' and ''Once Upon a Time in the West''. He was chosen by Leone to direct ''Duck, You Sucker!'' after Peter Bogdanovich was fired, but the American production rejected this decision and Leone was forced to direct the movie himself. At any rate, Santi was the second unit director. He finally debuted as director in 1972, with the spaghetti western ''The Grand Duel''. ''Once Upon a Time in the West'' ( , "Once upon a time (there was) the West") is a 1968 epic Spaghetti Western film directed by Sergio Leone, who co-wrote it with Sergio Donati based on a story by Dario Argento, Bernardo Bertolucci, and Leone. It stars Henry Fonda, cast against type as the villain, Charles Bronson as his nemesis, Jason Robards as a bandit, and Claudia Cardinale as a newly widowed homesteader. The widescreen cinematography was by Tonino Delli Colli, and the acclaimed film score was by Ennio Morricone.
