The Governor (1939 Film)
''The Governor'' (German: ''Der Gouverneur'') is a 1939 German drama film directed by Viktor Tourjansky and starring Brigitte Horney, Willy Birgel and Hannelore Schroth.Waldman p.282 It is based on the play ''Die Fahne'' by Emmerich Groh. It was shot at the Babelsberg Studios, Babelsberg and Tempelhof Studios in Berlin and location shooting, on location in East Prussia. The film's sets were designed by the art director Max Mellin. It was produced on a budget of 715,000 Reichsmarks. Synopsis In a fictional Scandinavian country, a high-ranking military officer decides to overthrow Parliament. Salvation in the party turmoil is the military dictatorship under the resolute governor General Werkonen. The new deputy ensures that an assassination attempt is carried out on them. However, the general is only slightly injured when it is executed. The hired assassin now feels abandoned by his employer and takes revenge by killing him. Paul Otto
Paul Otto Schlesinger (8 February 1878 – 25 or 30 November 1943) was a German film actor and director. Born in Berlin, he began a qualification as a retail merchant and made his actor's debut at the age of 17. Otto worked at Theaters in Halle, Wiesbaden and Hanover before he returned to Berlin about 1906. He first appeared in the silent film ''Ringkampf Konkurrenz'' in 1910 and in ''Arsène Lupin contra Sherlock Holmes'' (1910-11, five episode film serial) next to Viggo Larsen. In 1912 Otto directed his first own film ''Selbstgerichtet''. In the beginning of the 1930s he also appeared in successful Sound movies like '' Der Hauptmann von Köpenick''. Albert Peter Adam Florath (7 December 1888, Bielefeld – 11 March 1957, Gaildorf) was a German stage and film actor. Early life and education Born to Joseph Florath, a locksmith, and his wife Matilda, née Burkart, he attended school in Brakel and the Realgymnasium in Paderborn. He was bailiff candidate in Delbrück, where he was active in the welfare, church and school department and the police administration. Lotte Spira
Lotte Spira (; 24 April 1883 – 17 December 1943) was a German stage and film actress. She appeared in supporting roles in around seventy films. She was married to the Austrian actor Fritz Spira in 1905. In 1934 she divorced her Jewish husband under duress from the Nazi authorities. During the Second World War she signed a statement swearing Spira was not the real father of her daughter Camilla Spira, who was being held at Westerbork transit camp in the Netherlands.Baer p. 118 Shortly after Lotte Spira received news of her ex-husband's death in a concentration camp in Yugoslavia, she died of natural causes, aged 60.
