The Golden Mile (''La Milla de Oro'') is a term for a stretch of land that lays home to a group of wineries in the province of Valladolid, Castilla y Leon, Spain. Geographically they lay along the Duero river starting at Tudela de Duero in the west and continuing on until it reaches Peñafiel in the east along the N-122 motorway. The wineries associated include: Vega Sicilia, Pingus, Abadia Retuerta, Alión and Mauro. Valladolid
Valladolid () is a Municipalities of Spain, municipality in Spain and the primary seat of government and de facto capital of the Autonomous communities of Spain, autonomous community of Castile and León. It is also the capital of the province of Valladolid, province of the same name. It has a population around 300,000 people (2021 est.). Population figures from 1 January 2013. Duero
The Douro (, , ; es, Duero ; la, Durius) is the highest-flow river of the Iberian Peninsula. It rises near Duruelo de la Sierra in Soria Province, central Spain, meanders south briefly then flows generally west through the north-west part of central Spain and into northern Portugal, to its mouth at Porto, the second largest city of Portugal. At its mouth it meets the Atlantic Ocean. The scenic Douro railway line runs close to the river. Adjacent areas produce port (a mildly fortified wine) and other agricultural produce. A small tributary of the river has the Côa Valley Paleolithic Art site which is considered important to the archaeological pre-historic patrimony, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Peñafiel, Spain
Peñafiel is a town in the Valladolid Province and the greater autonomous community of Castile and León, Spain. It is best known for the Peñafiel Castle and for its medieval square used for bullfights and named " Plaza del Coso" (English: "Bullring Square"). The square is surrounded by private homes, but since medieval times the rights to use their windows, balconies and doorways during bullfights are owned by the town (see easement), which auctions them to the highest bidders. The town is full of deep excavated caveswhich were traditionally used to store the wine because of the constant temperature they kept all year around. These caves have chimney vents for ventilation and to evacuate the gases generated by the fermentation of the wine. These chimney vents dot the landscape in and around the town and the castle. N-122
The N-122 is a highway in Spain. It connects Valladolid and Zaragoza to the Portugal–Spain border, where it connects to the A4 motorway (Portugal), this section was formerly the IP-4 and is now part of the European route E82 to Matosinhos. The border is formed by the Rio Macãs it heads east crossing the Esla river to Zamora and the Duero river valley. The N-630 crosses to the north and south. After Zamora the N-122 follows the river passing Toro. Most traffic now takes the Autovía A-11. At Tordesillas there are junctions with the Autovía A-62 and Autovía A-6. The road becomes the A-62 to Valladolid where it meets the N-601. The road heads east as the A-11 and then after 14 km the N-122 again. The road crosses to the south bank of the Rio Duero to the town and castle of Peñafiel. It continues to Aranda de Duero and the Autovía A-1. Pingus (wine)
Dominio de Pingus is a Spanish winery located in Quintanilla de Onésimo in Valladolid province with vineyards in La Horra area of the Ribera del Duero region. The estate's flagship wine, Pingus, is considered a "cult wine", sold at extremely high prices while remaining very inaccessible, and commands an average price of $811 per bottle. The winery also produces a second wine, Flor de Pingus, and a special ''cuvée'', Ribera del Duero "Amelia". Recently, Dominio de Pingus has founded a joint project with local grape producers to make an old vine tempranillo called "PSI". Ribera del Duero is a Spanish Denominación de Origen Protegida (DOP) located in the country's northern plateau and is one of eleven 'quality wine' regions within the autonomous community of Castile and León. It is also one of several recognised wine-producing regions to be found along the course of the Duero river.
