The Glorious Adventure (1918 Film)
''The Glorious Adventure'' is a lost 1918 American silent drama film directed by Hobart Henley. Plot As described in a film magazine, at the death of her aunt Carey Wethersbee (Marsh) decides to go visiting. In a distant town she decides to make the home of Hiram A. Ward (Standing), wealthy mill owner, her stopping place. That Mr. Ward is not pleased is evidenced in his every action towards her, but finally he comes to regard the young woman as a pleasure, and before long he falls in love with her. Because of his cruel treatment of his employees, Carey does not glory in his proposal and, after his factory has been blown up and he seeks to prosecute an innocent man, Carey returns to her home. Shortly after, Hiram, realizing that Carey is right, adjusts his methods of dealing with his people and goes to Carey to explain everything and to win her heart. Hobart Henley
Hobart Henley (born Hess Manassah Henle; November 23, 1887 – May 22, 1964) was an American silent film actor, Film director, director, screenwriter and producer. He was involved in over 60 films either as an actor or director or both in his twenty-year career, between 1914 and 1934 when he retired from filmmaking. Early life Henley was born Hess Manassah Henle in Louisville, Kentucky, to Samuel Henle, a German immigrant and retailer, and his wife Clementine. His father moved the family to Cincinnati, Ohio, where Henley later attended and graduated from the University of Cincinnati. Career Henley began his career as a stage actor, then moved to acting in silent films. He began dual duties of directing and acting in such films as ''The Gay Old Dog'' for Pathé in 1919. For this list of lost films, a lost film is defined as one of which no part of a print is known to have survived. For films in which any portion of the footage remains (including trailers), see List of incomplete or partially lost films. Reasons for loss Films may go missing for a number of reasons. One major contributing factor is the common use of nitrate film until the early 1950s. This type of film is highly flammable, and there have been several devastating fires, such as the Universal Pictures fire in 1924, the 1937 Fox vault fire and the 1965 MGM vault fire. Black-and-white film prints judged to be otherwise worthless were sometimes incinerated to salvage the meager scrap value of the silver image particles in their emulsions. 1965 MGM Vault Fire
On August 10, 1965, a fire erupted in Vault 7, a storage facility, at the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studio (MGM) backlot (now Sony Pictures Studios) in Culver City, California. It was caused by an electrical short explosively igniting stored nitrate film. The initial explosion reportedly killed at least one person, and the resulting fire destroyed the entire contents of the vault, archived prints of silent and early sound films produced by MGM and its predecessors. The only known copies of hundreds of films were destroyed. Background The storage vaults, located on Lot 3, were spaced out to prevent fire from spreading between vaults. Studio manager Roger Mayer described the vaults as "concrete bunk houses" and stated that it was considered at the time as "good storage because he filmscouldn't be stolen".
