The Genealogy Roadshow
The Genealogy Roadshow is an Irish genealogy television series created by Big Mountain Productions and presented by Derek Mooney. The first (2011) & second (2014) series were broadcast on RTÉ One. Season One Season One was filmed around Ireland in 2011 and aired later that year. The first season had four episodes, each filmed at beautiful historical Irish locations, Slane Castle, Glenlo Abbey, Adare Manor & Carton House. The series was presented by Derek Mooney and he was joined by a leading team of genealogists & historians; Turtle Bunbury (historian), Nicola Morris (genealogist) and John Grenham (genealogist). The team traveled the country with the roadshow meeting members of the public and helping them trace their family's roots and discover surprising stories from the past. Derek Mooney
Derek James Mooney (born 4 March 1967) is an Irish radio and television presenter, as well as a radio producer. Until January 2015 he presented a weekday afternoon programme called ''Mooney'' on RTÉ Radio 1. He is the current executive producer across RTÉ Radio 1's nature and wildlife programming On television he has often presented game shows and talent contests: his presentation credits include ''Echo Island'', ''Gridlock'', ''Winning Streak'', the ill-fated ''Cabin Fever'', ''You're a Star'', ''The Big Money Game'', '' Fame: The Musical'', '' The Genealogy Roadshow'' and '' Who Knows Ireland Best?''. RTÉ One ( ga, RTÉ a hAon) is an Irish free-to-air flagship television channel owned and operated by Raidió Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ). It is the most-popular and most-watched television channel in the country and was launched as ''Telefís Éireann'' on 31 December 1961, it was renamed ''RTÉ'' in 1966, and it was renamed as RTÉ 1 upon the launch of RTÉ 2 in 1978. It is funded partly by the government's licence fee; the remainder of the funding is provided by commercial advertising. James Bunbury (born 21 February 1972), known as Turtle Bunbury, is an Irish author, historian, and television presenter. He has published a number of books such as the ''Vanishing Ireland'' series, ''Easter Dawn -The 1916 Rising'', ''The Glorious Madness'' (short-listed for Best Irish-published Book of the Year 2014) and ''1847 – A Chronicle of Genius, Generosity & Savagery''. Irish genealogy is the study of individuals and/or families who originated on the island of Ireland. Origins Genealogy was cultivated since at least the start of the early Irish historic era. Upon inauguration, Bards and poets are believed to have recited the ancestry of an inaugurated king to emphasise his hereditary right to rule. With the transition to written culture, oral history was preserved in the monastic settlements.
