The Gamblers (Shostakovich)
''The Gamblers'' (russian: Игроки, translit=Igroki, links=no), Op. 63, is an unfinished opera, composed by Dmitri Shostakovich in 1941/42 to his own libretto based on Nikolai Gogol's comedy '' The Gamblers'' (1842). The surviving first act lasts around 47 minutes. Krzysztof Meyer realised a completion in German, ''Die Spieler'', in 1981. Both versions were performed on stage and recorded. History Shostakovich based his first opera, '' The Nose'', on a satirical short story by Nikolai Gogol. For ''The Gamblers'', he turned again to the same author, this time to the play '' The Gamblers''. Shostakovich tried to set Gogol's play word for word. He realised when arriving at the end of the first act that the opera would become too long and unwieldy, and also that its mocking text and the bitter irony of the music would not be performed under the repressive regime at the time. He abandoned the project. He reused material from the opera in the scherzo of his final composition, the ...

The Gamblers (British Band)
Ronald Wycherley (17 April 1940 – 28 January 1983), better known as Billy Fury, was an English singer, musician, songwriter, and actor. An early star of rock and roll, he equalled the Beatles' record of 24 hits in the 1960s and spent 332 weeks on the UK chart. His hit singles include "Wondrous Place", "Halfway to Paradise" and "Jealousy". Fury also maintained a film career, notably playing rock performers in '' Play It Cool'' in 1962 and ''That'll Be the Day'' in 1973. AllMusic journalist Bruce Eder stated that Fury's "mix of rough-hewn good looks and unassuming masculinity, coupled with an underlying vulnerability, all presented with a good voice and some serious musical talent, helped turn iminto a major rock and roll star in short order". Others have suggested that his rapid rise to prominence was due to his "Elvis-influenced hip swivelling and, at times, highly suggestive stage act". Early years Fury was born Ronald Wycherley at Smithdown Hospital (later Sefton General ...

The Gamblers (surf Band)
The Gamblers were an American surf rock band formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1959. Distinguished by their vocal harmonies and early instrumental surf songs, the Gamblers are one of the first influential musical acts that recorded surf music, a genre popularized initially in Southern California. The group, led by primary songwriter Derry Weaver, recorded the "Moon Dawg!" single in late 1959, acknowledged as one of the earliest known surf records, and covered by West Coast groups such as the Beach Boys. In 1961, the group disbanded but its members, including Elliot Ingber, Larry Taylor, Bruce Johnston, and Sandy Nelson, went on to have successful music careers of their own. History Early in October 1959, Nick Venet began working for Richard Bock, a respected West coast jazz record producer at World Pacific, and was enlisted with creating new hit-ready single artists and buying master tapes for World Pacific to release. Venet, with the help of guitarist and songwriter Derry ...

Guitar Ray & The Gamblers
The guitar is a fretted musical instrument that typically has six strings. It is usually held flat against the player's body and played by strumming or plucking the strings with the dominant hand, while simultaneously pressing selected strings against frets with the fingers of the opposite hand. A plectrum or individual finger picks may also be used to strike the strings. The sound of the guitar is projected either acoustically, by means of a resonant chamber on the instrument, or amplified by an electronic pickup and an amplifier. The guitar is classified as a chordophone – meaning the sound is produced by a vibrating string stretched between two fixed points. Historically, a guitar was constructed from wood with its strings made of catgut. Steel guitar strings were introduced near the end of the nineteenth century in the United States; nylon strings came in the 1940s. The guitar's ancestors include the gittern, the vihuela, the four-course Renaissance guitar, and th ...

The Gamblers (play)
''The Gamblers'' (russian: «Игроки») is an 1840 play by Nikolai Gogol.Vasiliĭ Vasilʹevich Gippius, Robert A. Maguire ''Gogol'' 1981 p.90 "In The Gamblers Gogol made even greater use of traditional materials and departed even further from them. It has not been precisely determined just when this play was written. There are some grounds for dating it as 1840: after returning ..." Dmitri Shostakovich tried to compose an opera of the same title based upon the play. History The play was first published in a publication called "The Works of Nikolai Gogol" in 1842. This publication was the fourth section of "Dramatic Excerpts and Other Scenes". The whole section was dated by Gogol himself from 1832 to 1837. The final version of "The Gamblers" was released in 1842 but the play had been in the works before then. When he sent the play from Germany to Nikolai Prokopovich on August 29th, 1842, Gogol wrote "''I am now sending the play "The Gamblers" which I forcefully collected ...
