The Fighting Deputy
''The Fighting Deputy'' is a 1937 American western directed by Sam Newfield and produced by Jed Buell for Spectrum Pictures. Plot Sheriff Dan Bentley (Frank LaRue) and Deputy Tom Bentley ( Fred Scott) are after Scar Adams / Jim Denton ( Charles King), the brother of Alice Denton (Phoebe Logan). Tom Bentley plans to marry Alice Denton, but Sheriff Dan Bentley, Tom's father, is wounded and offers Tom the job as sheriff. Alice makes Tom refuse the job, but when Scar kills his father, Tom puts on the badge and takes off after him. Sam Newfield, born Samuel Neufeld, (December 6, 1899 - November 10, 1964), also known as Sherman Scott or Peter Stewart, was an American B-movie Film director, director, one of the most prolific in American film history—he is credited with directing over 250 feature films in a career which began during the silent era and ended in 1958. In addition to his staggering feature output, he also directed one -and two-reel comedy Short film, shorts, training films, industrial films, TV episodes and pretty much anything anyone would pay him for. Because of this massive output—he would sometimes direct more than 20 films in a single year—he has been called the most prolific director of the sound era. Marjorie Eileen Beebe (October 9, 1908 – May 9, 1983) was an American film actress. Early years Beebe was born on October 9, 1909. She graduated from Hollywood High School. Career Beebe tired of working as an assistant in a magician's show, so she went to Hollywood to become an actress. She was rejected by several casting directors before she found work for one day at FBO Pictures Corporation. Three months of additional searching resulted in a job at Universal Pictures, where she stayed nine months, appearing in minor roles. In 1927, she began longer employment at Fox Film. Jed Buell (May 21, 1897 - September 29, 1961) was an American film producer, director, and screenwriter who specialized in low-budget B pictures in a variety of subjects including singing cowboy films featuring midgets and black actors. Career Buell, born in Denver, Colorado to Dora Phelps and William J. Buell, was educated at the Corona School and North Denver High School. He began his film career as treasurer of the Denver Orpheum Theatre and Denham Theatre as well as the business manager of Denver's Elitch Theatre. In 1928 he became general manager of California Universal Chair Theaters. He joined Mack Sennett as a publicist and in 1930 was made director of all publicity at the Mack Sennett Studios in Hollywood. Fred Leedon Scott (February 14, 1902 – December 16, 1991) was an American actor best known as a singing cowboy star in Westerns during the 1930s and 1940s. Biography Scott was born on February 14, 1902, in Fresno, California, United States. He took voice lessons as a child and started acting in community theater at sixteen followed by working with a traveling troupe. Scott's family moved to Llano del Rio. He found work as a cowboy on a cattle ranch and tried to parlay the skills into film roles on horseback. He spent three years at Pathé as Helen Twelvetrees leading man.
