The Fake (play)
The Fake is a 1924 play by the British writer Frederick Lonsdale. It was staged at the Apollo Theatre in the West End theatre, West End with a cast that included Godfrey Tearle, Franklyn Bellamy and Allan Jeayes. Unlike most of his successful plays, generally farce-like comedies, this was intended as a serious drama although it contains a happy ending. It ran for 211 performances. Frederick Lonsdale
Frederick Lonsdale (5 February 1881 – 4 April 1954) was a British playwright known for his librettos to several successful musicals early in the 20th century, including '' King of Cadonia'' (1908), ''The Balkan Princess'' (1910), ''Betty'' (1915), ''The Maid of the Mountains'' (1917), '' Monsieur Beaucaire'' (1919) and ''Madame Pompadour'' (1923). He also wrote comedy plays, including '' The Last of Mrs. Cheyney'' (1925) and '' On Approval'' (1927) and the murder melodrama '' But for the Grace of God'' (1946). Some of his plays and musicals were made into films, and he also wrote a few screenplays. Personal life Lonsdale was born Lionel Frederick Leonard in St Helier, Jersey, the son of Susan (née Belford) and John Henry Leonard, a tobacconist. Miles Mander (born Lionel Henry Mander; 14 May 1888 – 8 February 1946), was an English character actor of the early Hollywood cinema, also a film director and producer, and a playwright and novelist. He was sometimes credited as Luther Miles. Early life Miles Mander was the second son of Theodore Mander, builder of Wightwick Manor, of the prominent Mander family, industrialists and public servants of Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, England. He was the younger brother of Geoffrey Mander, the Liberal Member of Parliament. Juliette Compton (May 3, 1899 – March 19, 1989) was an American actress whose career began in the silent film era and concluded with ''That Hamilton Woman'' in 1941. Career Compton was born in Columbus, Georgia, on May 3, 1899. She was a model for illustrator Harrison Fisher, and perhaps his favorite model. Compton's show business career began when she acted in ''The Kiss Burglar'' in New York. That was followed by a season in the Ziegfeld Follies. In London, she appeared on stage for three years, including acting in ''The League of Notions'' and went on to act in British films for five years. Financial problems On January 4, 1927, a bankruptcy court in London, England, appointed an official receiver for Compton after presentation of evidence that she had no assets and had liabilities of $37,500. Elga Brink
Elisabeth Margarete Biermann (née Brink, born Frey; 2 April 1905 – 28 October 1985), known professionally as Elga Brink, was a German film actress. Brink rose to prominence in the early 1920s, when she starred in many silent films. Her last silent film was '' Marriage in Trouble'' in 1928. After silent films, Brink continued acting in sound films until her retirement in 1951. Her last role was in the 1951 movie ''Das fremde Leben.'' After her retirement, Brink remarried and worked as a clerk in Hamburg until her death in 1985. Henry Edwards (18 September 1882 – 2 November 1952) was an English actor and film director. He appeared in more than 80 films between 1915 and 1952. He also directed 67 films between 1915 and 1937. Edwards married actress Chrissie White in 1924. She appeared in many of his films as did the couple's daughter, Henryetta Edwards. Silent Film
A silent film is a film with no synchronized recorded sound (or more generally, no audible dialogue). Though silent films convey narrative and emotion visually, various plot elements (such as a setting or era) or key lines of dialogue may, when necessary, be conveyed by the use of title cards. The term "silent film" is something of a misnomer, as these films were almost always accompanied by live sounds. During the silent era that existed from the mid-1890s to the late 1920s, a pianist, theater organist—or even, in large cities, a small orchestra—would often play music to accompany the films. Pianists and organists would play either from sheet music, or improvisation. Sometimes a person would even narrate the inter-title cards for the audience.
