The Essential Collection (ABBA Album)
''The Essential Collection'' is a 2012 compilation album released by Swedish pop group ABBA, collecting all single A-sides as originally planned and conceived by their record company, Polar Music, in addition to a few songs that were single hits in significant markets, as well as album tracks for which music videos were made. A two- CD set, the first disc spans 1972–1978 (" People Need Love" to " Summer Night City"), while the second covers 1979–1982 (" Chiquitita" to " Under Attack"). ''The Essential Collection'' effectively supersedes 2001's '' The Definitive Collection'', retaining all but two tracks from the earlier release (eliminating the " Ring Ring" and " Voulez-Vous" remixes) and adding four others (" Bang-A-Boomerang", " That's Me", " One Man, One Woman" and "Happy New Year"). ABBA
ABBA ( , , formerly named Björn & Benny, Agnetha & Anni-Frid or Björn & Benny, Agnetha & Frida) are a Swedish supergroup formed in Stockholm in 1972 by Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad. "One Man, One Woman" is a song by ABBA, released on their 1977 album ''ABBA: The Album''. It is that album's third track after "Eagle (song), Eagle" and "Take a Chance on Me". Composed by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, it has appeared on several compilation albums over the years, such as 1998's ''Love Stories (ABBA album), Love Stories'' and 2012's ''The Essential Collection (ABBA album), The Essential Collection''. Synopsis The song is about a couple (made up of the titular "man" and "woman") trying to save their marriage. Composition Anni-Frid Lyngstad sang the lead vocals. The instruments used in the song are piano, synths, guitar and strings. The piano is used to add a colourful countermelody to the vocal pauses in the chorus, a similar technique to the "descending double-octave riff" used in "Dancing Queen." That's Me
"That's Me", originally "Coachman's Farm", is a song recorded by the Swedish pop group ABBA in 1976. It was released as a single in Japan in July 1977 as the fourth and final single from the album '' Arrival'' album. It reached number 75 on the official Japanese charts. Elsewhere, "That's Me" was used as the B-side to ABBA's hit single, "Dancing Queen". A music video, filmed during the making of 1976 TV special ''ABBA-dabba-doo!'', was made for the song to promote it, which combined original footage, as well as clips and outtakes from previous ABBA "promo videos", and had its debut seventeen years after being actually filmed, as part of the ''More ABBA Gold'' video compilation in 1993. A greatest hits compilation by Agnetha released internationally in 1998 was named after this song (see '' That's Me''), one of her favorite ABBA songs. Bang-A-Boomerang
"Bang-A-Boomerang" is a song by ABBA, first released by Svenne & Lotta (both Swedish and English-language versions). The track was first recorded as a demo with English lyrics (but without any recorded vocals) in September 1974 by the ABBA musicians for their eponymous album '' ABBA''. The song was written by Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus and Stig Anderson and at one point had the working title "Stop and Listen to Your Heart". The lyrics compare the "message of love" with the returning boomerangs which the Australian Aborigines developed. In late 1974 Andersson, Ulvaeus and Anderson were invited by Sveriges Television as composers to submit a song to the 1975 ''Melodifestivalen''. "Voulez-Vous" ( ; French for "Do you want?") is a 1979 song by the Swedish group ABBA, written and composed by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus. Agnetha Fältskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad shared the lead vocals. It is the second track on the group's 1979 album of the same name. In the UK and Ireland, "Voulez-Vous" was released as a double A-side, though nearly everywhere else, "Voulez-Vous" was a single A-side. The double A side single is, as of September 2021, ABBA's 13th-biggest song in the UK, including both pure sales and digital streams. "Ring Ring" is a song by Swedish group ABBA, released as the title track of their 1973 debut album. The single gave the group their big break in several European countries (although the rest of Europe, North America and Australia would be introduced to ABBA the following year). The Definitive Collection (ABBA Album)
''The Definitive Collection'' is a 2001 compilation album of all the singles released by Swedish pop group ABBA. It consisted of two discs: the first featuring the singles from 1972 to 1979 ("People Need Love" to "Does Your Mother Know"), and the second including the singles from 1979 to 1982 (" Voulez-Vous" to "Under Attack"), with the tracks being listed in chronological order. The main exception is the track "Thank You for the Music", which, despite being written and recorded in 1977, was in fact released as a single (primarily in the UK) in 1983 after the band had split up. It appears on disc two, along with two bonus tracks, " Ring Ring" (1974 UK single remix), and "Voulez-Vous" (1979 US promo extended remix). Under Attack
"Under Attack" is a song by Swedish pop group ABBA, released in December 1982 as the second and final single from the compilation '' The Singles: The First Ten Years''. Background ABBA recorded "Under Attack" between 2 and 4 August 1982 at Polar Music Studios, Stockholm. The group had originally intended to release a new studio album, but instead decided to release a double-album compilation of their past singles while adding two new songs from the session. The two new tracks that made it onto ''The Singles: The First Ten Years'' were "The Day Before You Came" and "Under Attack". The latter would eventually be added to the expanded editions of The Visitors album. On 11 December 1982, ABBA performed "Under Attack" on the BBC's ''Late Late Breakfast Show'', in what was their last collective performance. Chiquitita
"Chiquitita" (a Spanish term of endearment for a woman meaning "little one") is a song recorded by Swedish pop group ABBA. It was released in January 1979 as the first single from the group's sixth album, '' Voulez-Vous'' (1979). Agnetha Fältskog performs the lead vocals. Originally, the track "If It Wasn't for the Nights" was going to be the album's lead single, but after "Chiquitita" was completed those plans were abandoned, and it would remain an album track. Background and release Many preliminary versions of "Chiquitita" exist. It had working titles of "Kålsupare", "3 Wise Guys", "Chiquitita Angelina" and "In The Arms of Rosalita".
