The Ed Wynn Show (1958 TV Series)
''The Ed Wynn Show'' is a filmed sitcom that aired Thursday evenings on NBC from September 25, 1958 to January 1, 1959. It was the second TV show of the same name for the veteran comedian Ed Wynn, and his third television series overall. The Thalia-Keethwyn production company, of which he and his son Keenan Wynn were part-owners, worked with Screen Gems to make the show. Premise John Beamer (Ed Wynn) is a retired taxidermist in a small college town. He is a widower who lives in a big old house with his two granddaughters. The elder, Laurie (Jacklyn O'Donnell), attends the local college, while Midge (Sherry Alberoni) is a school girl. Their mother is dead, their father is mentioned as working overseas. Advance publicity described Beamer as a "wily old widower with a genius for solving other people's problems". Sitcom
A sitcom, a portmanteau of situation comedy, or situational comedy, is a genre of comedy centered on a fixed set of characters who mostly carry over from episode to episode. Sitcoms can be contrasted with sketch comedy, where a troupe may use new characters in each sketch, and stand-up comedy, where a comedian tells jokes and stories to an audience. Sitcoms originated in radio, but today are found mostly on television as one of its dominant narrative forms. The Western Electric Company was an American electrical engineering and manufacturing company officially founded in 1869. Launched shortly after Caniff retired from his previous strip, '' Terry and the Pirates'', ''Steve Canyon'' ran from January 13, 1947, until June 4, 1988. It ended shortly after Caniff's death. ''Twenty-One'' was an American game show originally hosted by Jack Barry that aired on NBC from 1956 to 1958. Produced by Jack Barry-Dan Enright Productions, two contestants competed against each other in separate isolation booths, answering general-knowledge questions to earn 21 total points. The program became notorious when it was found to be rigged as part of the 1950s quiz show scandals, which nearly caused the demise of the entire genre in the wake of United States Senate investigations. ''Haggis Baggis'' is an American game show that aired on NBC from 1958 to 1959. Jack Linkletter hosted the primetime version while Fred Robbins and Dennis James did the daytime show. The announcer was Bill Wendell, with some editions announced by Jerry Damon. The series was produced by Rainbow Productions, otherwise known as Joe Cates Productions, and created by William T. Naud. Game play Two players, usually women, competed. The object was to identify an image of a celebrity's face, which was concealed behind a 5×5 grid, with the horizontal dimension showing letters and the vertical dimension showing categories. ''You Bet Your Life'' is an American comedy quiz series that has aired on both radio and television. The original and best-known version was hosted by Groucho Marx of the Marx Brothers, with announcer and assistant George Fenneman. The show debuted on ABC Radio on October 27, 1947, moved to CBS Radio debuting October 5, 1949, and went to NBC-TV and NBC Radio on October 4, 1950. Because of its simple format, it was possible to broadcast the show on both radio and television but not simultaneously. Many of the laughs on the television show were evoked by Groucho's facial reactions and other visual gimmicks; the two versions were slightly different.
